Just grabbed a 400GB 7200.10. Quite happy with it.

Excellent news actually. Maybe motherboard manufacturers will stop putting PATA connectors on the boards too. Yizoo!! (of course that would mean I need a SATA burner, but I'd like that anyway)

So whats the deal with the Seagate Barracuda® 7200.11?

* Proven second-generation perpendicular recording technology
* Massive capacities of 1 TB, 750 GB and 500 GB
* Up to 32-MB Cache

I do too.

You know, I've been thinking... The invention of SATA has pretty much killed the "storage nerd" as I call them. I remember when it was "cool" to run SCSI drives, compare transfer rates, etc. Now everything is pretty much fast enough, reliable, cheap, etc. No more storage nerds. Hmm...

It's 7200.11 time!

Newegg 500GB $125 shipped

Newegg 1TB $300 shipped

Sweet drives at damn good prices. I have been tracking hdd prices for 3 months. The 500GB 7200.10(AS) has been at (and is still at) $120 since at least August. Gonna have to buy me one of the 500GB point11s me thinks soon.

.11s sound good to me. I'd like to stick a pair of them in my main gaming box, but I don't really feel like installing Vista again now that it's set up. Maybe I'll just make a mirrored data volume, and leave the system drive alone.

As of at or around the end of 2009...

7200
.10s suck ass...they are slow, noisy, and run too hot.
.11s are reasonable
.12s are the fastest, quietest, and release about the same heat as the Barracuda LPs that spin at 5900rpm

I almost don't have a preference between a Barracuda LP and a 7200.12 as they are about equal in speed...LPs are a little slower but generate a bit less heat...

These results are verified and certified through J3l2Ks0r! Laboratories Unlimited Ltd.

I saw the XTs a while back when I was sampling all the Barracudas... HOPEFULLY the XTs can actually begin to somewhat mildly approach the 3Gb/s SATA transfer rate as none of the ones above even come close. I think 6Gb/s is a horribly overestimated theoretical limit that the drives won't come near by several orders of magnitude.

Ah...according to the Seagate's XT datasheet they aren't that much faster...can supply 138 MB/s sustained transfer rate...I was getting between 90-110MB/s on the 7200.12

Seagate rates 7200.12s at 125MB/s

so we are only talking about an increase of 13MB/s...pretty ridiculous, but not surprising, considering the drive is going from 300Gb/s to 600Gb/s...

So going by an increase of 13MB/s per 300Gb/s of "max transfer rate" the advertised max transfer rate would have to be at 4500Gb/s to get 307MB/s and 11,400GB/s to get 600MB/s

Heh, it's like saying a car can go 300mph because of its aerodynamics but the motor can only push it to 150mph...

Wonder if it will score above 5.9 in Windows7?
