Have you read Snow Crash by any chance? That would make you a gargoyle.

Ok, just followed the link. I don't know if I could read it after Gibson. It seems like it would be somewhat second rate. Gibson's stuff might not be as "realistic" by today's standards, but I don't think anyone else in the genre has that quality of writing that completely removes you from reality while you're reading. Also, since he wrote them so long ago, all the technology is both futuristic and archaic at the same time. (Which I love.)

Oh I guarantee you it is not second rate to Gibson. They are both very good in their own rights but I prefer Stephenson's writing style to Gibson's (which is saying a lot because I love Gibson). Stephenson's Cryptonomicon is probably my all time favorite contemporary fiction. You may want to give Gibson's latest, Pattern Recognition, a read. It is beautifully written.

Also, while wearing that computer on your head be sure to yell, "Hey kid, I'm a computer!"
You could probably run into walls a lot too.

I may do that. I haven't gotten myself into one of my "read a bunch of books all at once, and then not read for a while" moods. I'm still in the not read for a while part. I picked up Idoru, but only read the first couple chapters. It was quite a good start too, I just haven't found the time to keep going yet.

Rumor has it that the 3ndpc is getting a mini make over, courtesy of a little grampa-tactics (<wink><wink> to those in the know).

Here are the new soon-to-be specs:

MSI 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum Ed.
P4 3.0E (Prescott) 800MHz
1GB (512x2 Dual Channel) PC3200
NEC 16X DVD+/-RW Dual Layer
(16X DVD+R, 4X DVD+RW, 4X DVD+R9, 16X DVD-R, 4X DVD-RW, 48X CD-R, 24X CD-RW)

It should be Image

Prescotts don't OC as well as Northwoods because they run significantly hotter. If you can get the same speed Northwood you should do it. Even if you aren't OCing. (Keep temps down.) Nice setup otherwise! Having those dual RAM channels helps more than people think, and more than the graphs tend to show. I think you'll be pleased with the new performance level. If you have any Intelish parts left after your dealings, then you should try and get McNarvin converted. He must be turned to the dark side.

Yes he will come back eventually. Actually Northwoods are a good $20-30 more expensive. I am aware of Prescott shortcomings at 3.0GHz and lower and would have opted for the NWood if I had a choice but sometimes when a deal comes along you just gotta take what you can get. Basically I get a 200Mhz bump, bus upgrade to 800MHz, dual channels of RAM, and AGP8X. Not a huuuuge upgrade but a nice little one. That and an awesome new burner.

What do you think are the chances that I will have to a)reinstall at all, b)reinstall over the top, or c)completely reinstall? I imagine it will be a B case in going from the 845 to the 865.

new motherboard means minimum reinstall over the top, but often completely reinstall. This all based on personal experience. I once had to do both while swapping motherboards, only to find out the problem was the cheap ass broken PC3200 Dual DDR 512MB sticks of RAM I bought from frys for $49. I guess you get what you pay for...even at frys.

You might not HAVE to reinstall, but I would do a complete reinstall. It makes a huge difference.

I envy anyone with the Corsair memory with the LED meters on the top of each module. Even if you never see them in action because the case is on. Actually, that makes me envy them all the more. I want to have about 62,000,438 blinking lights in my case that you can only see when the side panel is removed. :D

TEE HEE HEE. Good to be back Admiral. Don't think I'll be leaving again for a good long while. Next thing I might do if I run into a little chunk of money is get an NForce 4 and a PCIX 6800. Then later I can get another 6800 and SLI them. :D That's a while off though. I'm quite happy with my system, and I REALLY need to buy a nice synth. I've been using software synths for too long now. I miss knob twiddling. I also only have that little 3 octave controller (which is good for writing music, but sucks for sitting down and playing.)

Yes... This MB is great, I think it will hold me for quite a while. For my next system, I want to do a complete overhaul.
