You may also need to update your chipset drivers, and there are a ton of options in the ATI drivers for compatibility and such. Might try the fast-writes and things like that. That shouldn't really cause a problem, but I've seen it before. Usually only a performance thing though.
That's stupid. Did the card look fine when you took it out of the box? No damage, mashed capacitors, etc.

Well i found one potential problem, and fixed another.
This motherboard is only agp 4x, i have an 8x mb, and im going to try that.
I fixed the 2d errors by turning off "enable write combining" under troubleshooting in the display properties. Which should have been tried a lot sooner.
The 3d problem will not go away, but i attribute that to the agp 4x? what do you think?
UT2004 was purchased yesterday, and is unplayable due to polygons stretching across the screen.

I doubt that it is the AGP 4X itself, though like I said, I wouldn't rule out the crappy VIA AGP Miniport driver. Let me know what happens with the 8X board. At the very least, it is a newer chipset, and may handle that card better. There isn't too much that could be wrong. I've been using that card since last year with no problems. The only time something could have happened is during shipping, though if the box was intact, and nothing on the card was broken, then that isn't the case either. I have a feeling it's going to work on your newer board. Of course you could always go.... Intel (Sorry) Did you play around in the BIOS at all? It seems like VIA chipset have a lot of weird AGP settings usually.

Sorry for the lack of monkey updates, but me and ender have been utilizing the DVD medium to the point of crazyness.
We were burning discs like dvd was going out of style!
So.. anyway, we now have the card working. It was exactly what you posted earlier, the fast writes. Duh, well I got too drunk yesterday to even begin to think about agp settings!
So all is good with the card, thanks for the sweet card, and for tech support.

BTW: Fast writes will really only give you a couple percent, so it doesn't matter that much that you have them off. You should switch to AGP 8X though. You'll probably never use that bandwidth, but I imagine there are some peak cases where you might use a little more than 4X. Not sure though. How does Far Cry run on it? I imagine that we're all nearly ready to play some UT2004? I need to install it again. There are a couple of bonus packs available for it. Everyone should get and install them, so we all have the same maps and such.
I have this feeling that a new motherboard would allow you to play nearly maxed in 1024. When I was using that card, I had everything at max, except shadows, which were at medium. (1024) My CPU is only a 2.4C. And AMDs are a little more efficient than Intels. I think what you're missing from my setup is AGP 8X with FW, and dual RAM channels. I'd highly recommend picking up that NForce 2 ultra. The brand doesn't matter in the least anymore, as long as it works. My specs again for comparison purposes. (Plus I like listing specs.)
Abit IC7 (i876 dual channel)
1GB Cheapie Kingston DDR400 (1x512MB module per channel)
Intel P4 2.4C (800MHz FSB)
Radeon X800Pro (was your 9800 Pro)
SB Audigy 2
2xSeagate Barracuda IV 80GB
Toshiba M1612 DVD
MSI 48X CDR
D-Link Wireless NIC
Etc.
An NForce 2 Ultra with DDR 400 and a decent Athlon XP should be able to run fairly close to what my system does. FP on an Athlon is a little more efficient, the I think it has less stages in its pipeline to stall. Etc. Even if you used your current RAM on that board, you'd be a great deal faster.

Wow! That was posted before I even got to your house on Weds. Granted we didn't really try that hard, but we did talk about it a lot for the next 20 or so hours.J3RK wrote:Posted: Wed Jun 30, 2004 12:12 pm

I am finally home after some very ridiculously stupid car goings-on (minus my car btw) but thanks k3v for the hospitality. It was certainly a fruitful trip sw wise. I came home with over 40GB of new gaming goodness. Now I just need to decide what to play first.
Bos et al. - I would very much like to figure out how to make the BT Gig Spiggot work but more research is needed into the subject of private network bit torrent. Sparkle and I both read about it in the past but I have been unable to dig up any new info. Supakuru?
I'm all UT2004,Farcry,CoD,BF:V-ed up so let's get down and play.

Fast writes, looking for a hacked miniport dirver, power supply, agp 8x, direct x 9.0c, service pack 2, nvidia driver remnants, case gremlins...
There was alot of suspected causes. We had 4 heads pouring out ideas of what could be the problem. The reason i didnt try disabling fast writes i think was the fact that the 2d was fucked. In my head it seemed to me somthing hardware related, but i guess i should have tried the fast writes sooner.

WWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
I think I'm going to modify my X800 Pro. It requires a simple heatsink removal, and bridging two contact points. It doesn't work on all chips, but it doesn't seem to have any ill effects if the pipes do not get enabled with this mod. I've overclocked the card way past X800XTPE speeds, so if the pipes can be enabled, I'll clock it to XT speeds, and have an XT. WWWWWWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!
I wasn't going to do this at first, but it's so frickin' simple. So many people are affraid to do it. "Oh no! I don't want to connect two points that were already meant to be connected depending on the card I bought."
Will post the results when I do it.

Didn't do it yet. I got a tube of Arctic Silver 5 so that I could replace the cooler when I'm done, but I haven't had a chance to pull it apart yet. Arctic silver is delightful. I always scoffed at the idea that a different goo could make a drastic change in temp, but the combination of that, and my new Zalman cooler dropped the temp 20 degrees, and is silent. All I can here from my computer is the Video card, which isn't that loud either. I think my PC is almost to Seth standards, but not quite.
Yes! It's the new revision of the ASUS i875 board. It's got 512 or 1GB (Can't remember) of Kingston HyperX RAM. It's got SCSI, a Lynx L22 (nicest audio card available that doesn't cost four digits.) He only put in an ATI 9600SE (because it doesn't use a fan) I think he might go for an X800 Pro though, because they are fairly quiet, and they run cooler than a 9800. You should see his frickin' cooler. It's as big as my head!

Insanity.
So he's nearly done building and tweaking it to his liking. I think he's going to get DSL too, (because he can get a good deal on it.) He expressed an interest in playing games with us. Which is why he bought Doom 3. He's going to pick up Quake 3 as well. We're going to start having Q3A matches, so hopefully some of you will join. I know many of you are no longer fond of that game for whatever fucked up reason but it is still the best balanced, easiest to get into and put down when you want game available.
