Ocean: Which Gomez songs remind you of the Doors? I have their albums "Liquid Skin", "Bring It On" and "In Our Gun". I can't hear the resemblance.Does anybody else hear a strong resemblance to some Doors sounds in some of Gomez's songs? They don't sound the least bit English to me...
Music I've been enjoying lately...

Gomez Morrison?
The first half of "Brother" has a very Doors-like beat, and the angst-ridden vocals could almost be Jim Morrison.
The vocals on "Get Miles" are also very Jim. And the lyrics "The cars below my street take me away piece by piece" "I'm gonna head out towards the sea" are the sort of druggy shit that the Doors did rather well.
I usually hate English attempts at blues, including Eric Clapton, a lot of John Mayall, and some of Led Zep, but Gomez is spot-on in their blues-based songs.

I'll have to re-listen to those songs. The songs with the guy Ben on lead vocals always reminded me more of the Allmann Brothers for some reason; I guess 'cause he's got a husky voice and seems to have more slide guitar in his songs.
Regardless, I like their stuff. Got to see them live last year at Fuji Rock and they put on a good show.
I have lot of John Mayall and certainly there is alot of coal among the diamonds he's produced in the name of British Blues.

Mind if I scream, in all seriousness?
I've been having a listen to The Mars Volta.
Hmmmmmm. I'll stick my neck out here and declare them to be almost totally unlistenable.
They may not be afraid of seriousness which is admirable, but they're also not afraid of screaming at the tops of their voices. Repeatedly. I already have enough trouble in my life without that. Used in moderation, it might have considerable impact, but occurring more than say, twice in a song, it seems like an invitation to be taken out behind the privy and knocked on the head.
If I'm missing something here, could someone please set me straight...?

The Drum & Bass Fiesta - compiled by Suv and Patife
2CD mix of DnB, flavored by and mixed with Latin and Brazillian music. Very light, "song-oriented," accessible drum and bass. I've been listening to heavier DnB, but discovering the London Elektricity album and this is swaying my daily rotation into a lighter jazzy DnB vibe. It also goes well with the summer heat that has finally decided to arrive, so I've been enjoying this album tremendously lately.

The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium
Well... I stumbled across a copy of De-Loused in the Comatorium, and I decided to give a listen solely based on the buzz on this forum... I've always been a big fan of At the Drive In... and I was under the impression that Sparta was the only band with ex-at the drive in members. I did a little allmusic.com research and was even more psyched after I discovered that they're the other post-at the drive in band. I really dig the variation in style they throw at you, but that signature frenetic energy is still there. This will definitely be in my rotation this season when I ride!
Muse - Absolution
If you don't know Muse, first listen to their previous album Origin of Symmetry. They're awesome songwriters, and they have an epic sound. The new album does not dissapoint at all. Style-wise, it's mostly a continuation of their last album but no complaints because it's just more of a good thing.

I've been listening to...
... a wonderful new CD from Sasha (formerly of Sasha and Digweed, or maybe still, (don't know if they still work together or not.)) Now before you say, J3RK, why the hell are you listening to trance??? You must understand, that this is NOT a trance CD at all, but rather an Autechre-ish Download-ish, beautiful, partially break extravaganza from space!!! I don't know what the album is called right off hand as I just got a copy from someone a couple days ago, but find it and listen to it right now if you like any form of breakish electronic bidniss!! I SAID NOW!!!! Anyway, yeah, it's cool...
Is the Sasha alum called "AirDrawnDagger"???
I've touted them before, but I have to rave about the new Bouncing Souls album which just came out; it's called "Anchors Aweigh" and it's their usual brand of power emo whatever punk. I can't seem to get it out of my CD player. For all you peeps in Sea-town, they're swinging through your way playing at Graceland on October 3rd and 4th. I suggest you check 'em out 'cause they're great live and have a big following. I think you can still hear streams of the new album on the Epitaph homepage.
I'd also like to recommend a GREAT Brazilian hip hop album I picked up recently. Unfortunately, the only info I can find on the web about it is in Portuguese and the official website for the album is under construction. The main artist is a rapper named Marcelo "D2" and he lays down some serious flow. It also features one track produced by Mario Caldato Jr. and a few of the tracks are scratched by MixMaster Mike (!). (Mr. S: this is what I played for you before the Juban festival.) I think you can find it on Kazaa if you search for Marcelo D2...
I've picked up a bunch of other stuff recently, but I haven't gotten through it all yet. Maybe I'll listen to it on the plane when I head to NYC in 2 weeks for my pizza research project.

It's...
... actually written on the CD but it's in the player in my car, and I'm working, so I'll check later. It starts off kinda soft, some pretty but darkish chords, and then later gets rather breaky in almost an Orbital kinda way. It's not their standard trance style. I can't stand trance as a general rule. I'll admit I've heard a track or two of some older hard acidy trance that I've liked, but for me it's spacey stuff like that or the newer Juno Reactor stuff, hard minimal techno (Detroit or German,) UK drum and bass, or some really acidy breaks. Oh, and of course good (emphasis on GOOD,) hip-hop. Agent Bos has actually sparked a small interest in me for some hard-rocked-out-yelly-bidniss, but I wouldn't call it my main interest. If those guys played stuff like what I have on my CD at Graceland I'd go, but I have a feeling it'll be a trance-fest.
It is in fact...
... AirDrawnDagger... Nice stuff. I'm quite into that spacey break Autechre-esque biznizz....

Spoon have some nice pop songs. Stay Don't Go with the voice drum machine is something bands should do more of. Lot of scope there.
Since Johnny Cash just died and I never heard a single one of his songs, I figgered I should download a few and find out just who he was.
Goemon, turns out Gomez have actually covered the Doors - I just scagged a copy of 'Soul Kitchen'. I don't really like Doors covers though - if it ain't the Lizard King himself, it always sounds a bit lame.

I hear ya on that, Ocean. I recently saw some concert footage from the Summer Sonic festival featuring the "New Millenium Doors" or whatever silly name they've given themselves. Looked pretty pathetic.I don't really like Doors covers though - if it ain't the Lizard King himself, it always sounds a bit lame.
thought I'd chime in, though my tastes seem to deviate from what is on here....
anyway, been listening to lots of Karl Denson lately...
he is a sick sax player...kind of fusion jazz....he used to play with DJ Greyboy and the GreyBoy Allstars...
The Bridge is his new album and its tight...
my fav from him is Dance Lesson #2...incredible grooves
Chunky Pecan Pie is also a good funky listen
I have also been diving back into Sound Tribe Sector 9, which some of you might dig...its one of these "organic" ambient/garage house/dnb type stuff....they all play their groves lives, no dj...best to find live stuff, but a good album is Offered Schematics Suggesting Peace
and finally, been digging deep into some classic Soul and Funk...James Brown (Hell, Black Caeser), Dr. John, Sly and the Family Stone....classics...
oh oh...I got more...if you are into "world music" (i dont really like that name), check out this african jazz master, Fela Kuti, nobody sounds like this guy, except his son, Femi Kuti (also has great stuff)
enjoy
