Met Jill Kintner yesterday...
It was kind of a big deal but at the same time not really. Jill Kintner and her brother Paul used to race BMX at the same race tracks I rode on 15 years ago. Paul is a pro dirt jumper and Jill is a pro mountain biker - not sure what the MTB disciplines are called...but she went back to BMX to ride in the olympics and ended up with a bronze medal.
She was at the Seatac BMX track only 10 minutes from Renton and was just down to sign autographs and get pictures. I probably should have got a picture with her but it seemed kind of cheesy or something. I just talked to her about her bike - which is stupid light at 19.6lbs she said. When I picked it up it felt more like 10lbs. She rode the whole track and jumped everything, which is unusual for a girl because they typically never jump anything, and did it very easily...it was kind of weird to see because I've seen really fast powerful guys do it but when she did it looked softer or something it is hard to describe - graceful would be a good word I think.
Her brother Paul coasted the whole track and somehow was able to jump through the last two straights - never pedaling anywhere on the track...never seen that done before.
I went to the track to see about racing again. I thought I might be able to do it but I don't have the endurance and almost crashed about five times from not being able to use the power I normally have to get through stuff.
I did well at the starting gate during gate practice though. Gate practice is where they just load up the starting gate with anyone and drop it over and over again. I went up against every fast guy that was there that I could. I did surprisingly well - like too well really and guys stopped getting on the gate with me after going a couple times. The reason was because I have my bike setup as an old school jump bike and have 48 spoked wheels and small handlebars. My bike is 30lbs and those guys have 23lb bikes with light weight aluminum wheels which make a huge difference in acceleration. The rear wheel is the most important. Is simple physics to know the lighter the wheel the easier it is to get it moving so you can have good acceleration. Oh yeah and the race frame geometry is supposed to help you accelerate. And wider bars for more application of torque, and lighter bike weight along with lighter person weight helps a lot too...oh yeah and practice, I hadn't done a gate start in 15 years...so I had a lot going against me.
I did a ton of gate starts and wanted to race but by the time racing started I was about to collapse after riding hard(sprints) for three hours straight. Next time...

Another B|\/|X0r upgrade...
- handle bar upgrade from 24.5" width by 7.5" rise to 28" width and 8" rise. Bar is 2 oz lighter and heat treated - is strongest S&M bar offered and USA made.
(also have bar ends that won't fall out after ends hit the ground too hard)
- 6 oz lighter stem without stupid gyro tabs - equal strength as old total overkill 1lb stem. S&M USA made.
- Long overdue chain replacement with new super strong single speed chain up from 2032ft/lb tensile strength to 2688ft/lb and of course is not fatigued so no breaking any time soon is the hope even though made in China...
- New front chainring still 45 tooth and still USA made by Profile.
- NEW WHEELSET!!!!!!!!!! w00t!!!!!! In an attempt to save weight (to increase acceleration mainly by rotating mass reduction) without sacrificing strength a custom wheelset was called for.
New wheelset uses USA made by Profile hubs(one of if not THE strongest) laced using 36 stronger(thicker) stainless steel spokes with a more aggressive(stronger) lacing pattern than old 48 skinnier(double butted stainless) spokes with a normal lace pattern.
Rims are from the United Kingdom by Proper bike and are well proven semi-lightweight and drilled internally in the spaces where strength is not as crucial. Honestly I don't think the holes save much weight - maybe a few grams...But I like teh hoopz!
New light weight race tire for the rear wheel. Supposedly designed for 2008 olympics. Super light but super nice. Also replaced super thick inner tube with lighter more standard thickness inner tube. Made a HUGE difference with traction and acceleration.
Bike weight is down by approx 1.75lbs to 28.25lbs - and again with increased strength! Have used two scales now and both give different results so bike is somewhere between( 28.0 - 28.5 )

Well...it was fun while it lasted...
Couple pictures from a week ago when it was sunny...
Not too sure when I will be able to take this jump again as the straight up to this jump was 2/3 submerged in water...now it is completely submerged and will take some time to dry out...oh well...was fun while it lasted...

Racing again - 1st race good, 2nd race bad.
Both races were at a small indoor track using total points scoring. This is where the rider with the lowest score wins after three races. If you win all three you get three points - losing all three would mean 24 points if there were 8 other riders and you came in last every time.
The first race I was in, two weeks ago, had four riders - I won all three races. It was the novice class, which is the beginner class, but since it was my first race in 15 years I thought I should start there. The other riders weren't even jumping so it was pretty easy to win but since no one was around me it was like I was the only one on the track so that was not a good way to get better.
The second race was last night and had a smaller turnout so I raced in a mixed class with two experts and one intermediate - I lost every race. The two experts were 18 and 36 years old and outclassed me so I couldn't get near them. The intermediate was over 6ft and easily 240lbs and I couldn't get around him. The first race the two experts took each other out and so I technically got second but if they didn't crash it would have been me in last. The second race I got more aggressive and had charged the intermediate three times but got shut down worse each time. The first time I went to the inside of the first turn and jumped the first double and while I was in the air along side of him he cut over to me and shut me down right as I landed. The second double same thing but was more sketchy because there was even less room. The third straight he went way to the left leaving the right open so I went for it but he cut over hard and hit my bars with his hip right as I was pumping down a double and I don't even know what happened really other than I went down. The last race I was hurt from the wreck so I didn't try anything.
My left hand is hurt pretty bad from the crash. The calcification that occurred from the wrist healing after being fractured hurts pretty bad to the touch so not sure what is up with it now. I mangled the little finger and its knuckle so is hard to bend. The ring finger is jammed and swollen along with its knuckle. Pretty much screwed I think for at least a week - hopefully not two. Was hurt going into this now though with my right arm. Something is screwed up with the joint and it is always cracking plus I have bad tendinitis or something going on with it - been icing it everyday for about a month now.
I'm beat up.

Race Bike RAW!!!!
There isn't paint strong enough - rust can't touch this!!!! so go RAW I say!!!!!
It is forged from two space age alloys (made by space aliens from planet Seekret) made up of Vibranium(The same material as Captain Americas Shield (totally indestructable)) AND Adamantium(virtually indestructable)

Frame has been ordered...will take 3-6 weeks for delivery.
More than half of the parts have been ordered and half of them are already here.
Unknown whether or not I am going to be able to run the gear I want because it might actually interfere with the frame as new frames are designed to work with smaller gears these days. Hoping to be able to put a 34 tooth chainwheel on the front.
Color of frame is "gun metal." - rest of parts will be black except for wheels will be from old bike although I may get different ones later.

ALL PARTS HAVE BEEN FINALIZED!
The main delay was finding out what gear I could run in the front without interfering with the frame. Turns out I will get to run the gear I wanted which is really nice.
Estimated completion date is the weekend of June 12th.
Estimated weight is 22.7lbs which is 6lbs lighter than current bike.
Estimated gluteal podiatristic impact trauma is MAXIMUS!!!

No frame - so I raced my old bike!
Where is da frame??? It was supposed to be here last Friday...Has been over a month now and tomorrow is my birthday and I really wanted to have it together by then...
Obviously having the bike put togethr June 12th is not happening...I have all parts except the chain and possibly the headset.
Maybe it will come today, but it better come this week no later than this Friday.
I raced yesterday for the first time at an outdoor track and was hoping to have my lighter bike - I am thinking it is going to be more like 24lbs not 22.7. I don't see how it could get that light but 24 is 4.5lbs lighter than my current so that is a pretty big difference. The cool thing is even with the heavy bike I was not hindered in any way and only got beat by a rider ranked 8 nationally. I wasn't very far behind him in the main event. I still need to get comfortable riding with other people especially when I am in the air at the same time as someone else. All in all, even with a tall gear(slow gate starts) and a heavy bike, I did well coming in 2nd out of 7 riders. When I get my new bike it should be pretty good off of the gate so I should be able to do a lot better...

Soon it will be dirty and scratched up...t'will never look this nice again.
I am trying to get a stronger chain with a tensile strength(up 220ft/lbs) rated at 2866ft/lbs AND it is lighter! Problem is I can only get it in Australia for some reason...
Oh yeah - so the bike is no compromises strong but lightweight. The frame material is made from a non-heat treated chromoly alloy that is stronger than heat treated chromoly AND all the welds are much stronger than the welds on a heat treated frame. Whenever a heat treated frame is welded it actually gets weakened at the welds - on my frame the welds make the frame stronger in the area that is affected by the heat from the welding process.
The crank arms are totally ridiculous and the pedals are extremely light but extremely strong - they are actually MTB pedals. I did go with heat treated forks and handlebars. The wheels as I have mentioned before are a 4 cross race lace pattern mated to a high quality light and strong hub set. The tires are full racing tires new for 2008 and are extremely light and maxed out to 100psi in the rear and 90 psi in the front.
The bike is silky smooooth....and basically just doesn't seem to want to stop rolling. I got it yesterday in time for my birthday...w00t!

The new bike is freaking crazy. It is like going from an SUV to a Porsche 911. The old bike was heavy but had a more even weight distribution. The new bike is light and very light in the front. I am basically used to it but it is just so much more capable than my old bike that now my riding has to get to a new level to really be able to take advantage of it.
I can accelerate faster, jump higher, jump further, manual easier, and corner quicker...it's just stupid ridiculous - it'll eat up all your crackers and your licorice.
Soon I will try the biggest jump Seatac has that I have only seen two riders(who also would eat all your crackers and your licorice) do the whole time I have been going to that track - the triples. There is a picture of me sitting on it at the bottom of page one of this thread. w00t!

Part failure...
I actually shattered a few bearings in one of my pedals. I have never seen bearings split in half before but after three days of riding the left pedal is fucked. These pedals are supposed to be strong too... unbelievable...they must be designed for bikes with suspension I suppose. The ridiculous thing is I didn't even ride them that hard. What a waste...I should be ok though since I got everything from the local bike shop but the question is now what kind of pedals to get. I got these because they were supposed to be really strong but not the case whatsoever. Maybe they were defective.
