Summer 08 Games (because the Fall 07 thread is too far down)

Post by R3C »

HEE HEE HEE...

So, I just picked up Mass Effect. I haven't installed it yet, but will probably get to it tomorrow. More on that as it develops. I registered it, so I can get the free expansion which should be ready soon.

Now discuss upcoming 08 games... I'll add some more in a bit as well...

This month I'm looking forward to Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. I'm in need of new content, and since the Wii doesnt support DLC this is my best offering.

Rock band for Wii comes out this month too, but I'm not too excited for the rock band experience. I'm more of the casual guitar hero type, unfortunately even that is evolving into a rock band clone in its next iteration. Guitar Hero: we now have drums, to continue printing money.

Im sure rock band is awesome, there is even a battle of the rock bands night at the last supper club!

I'm just not sure that i want antother pair of guitars and a drum peripheral in my living room. My wii toybox is already busting at the seams. 2 Wii zappers, 2 wheels, 2 classic controllers, 2 GH guitars, 2 nunchucks. /brag

I'd only buy it if you could battle with Scab. (Dwayne's band from Home Movies.) :D

MASS EFFECT IN FULL EFFECT!!! This game is amazing. It's more or less a modern day Star Control 2! It's a little less in depth in some ways, but more in others. And it doesn't have space battles, but you can explore TONS of systems, survey worlds, land on some to explore, complete missions, or find pirates to loot, etc. etc. Plenty of alien races to interact with (though not quite as many as SC2.) It's definitely easier to play than SC2, (which is good these days where I don't have enough time to learn all the little quirks by myself.) The main missions are paced perfectly, the side missions are fun (though a little repetitive at times.) The interface has been reworked for the PC, and couldn't be better. Combat is fun. It's like an RPG-ized version of Gears of War. Third person, take cover/shoot/take cover/move (or Sting and Move... Sting and Move) sort of thing. Your squad members are actually useful, don't get in your way, and each one is a little different, and adds something else to the squad. Usually on this type of game I just pick one set, and spend all my time improving that set. This game I find myself picking different squad members for different tasks. Anyway, this is the best game I've played recently, and is right up there with my standard list of favorites. (even near the top I'd think) I haven't played another game since I started playing this. Definitely one to get. The DLC for it is available soon as well (and for free.)

I just finished Mass Effect a few minutes ago. This is the best game I've played recently. And one of two games in several years, that I didn't decide to cheat part-way through to speed up the process. This is one that I may play through a few times as different character types, and make different decisions, etc. Everyone needs this game. That is all... ...or is it... ...perhaps not... ...on the other hand... ...well, I suppose for now...

The DLC and patch came out today for Mass Effect. So, if you were smart, and picked up the game like I suggested, you can now play the extra content. You did... pick up this game... didn't you?

Because there would be an extra large pile of stupid if you didn't. And by stupid, I mean really stupid... Or somesuch... :D

Anyway, get it, download the extra bits, and play it. Damnit!

I'll be starting my second play-through tonight. Gotta try a different class, try some of the other plot branches, maybe try being a bit more of a jerk sometimes, and try out these extra bits.

I ordered Dead Space from Direct2Drive, but I can't download it until next month. Grabbed Crysis Warhead, and it's quite fun. I also got The Witcher Enhanced Edition.

You should have played Mass Effect over the summer. Best game in years.

I'm in the middle of a nice game of SS2 right now. With texture pack, 1680x1050x32, widescreen mod, 16X AA, and 16X AF, it looks quite grand.

I'd like to play some Q4 or Prey MP sometime...

It was a bunch of backward garbage. 'twas all over the news pages for a while. They decided at the last minute, (probably because they are lazy bitches,) that they'd be limiting their PC audience by releasing the game. They think it would take hardware too expensive to run well, at least that was the excuse the marketing guy gave. Umm, the average gaming Pc has way more power than any current gen console. And if they're worried about watering down the experience, then why did they release it for the PS2?!?!?! Fuxing idiots at Lucas now I suppose. Any 8-series NV card has more power than the GPUs in the consoles. Bleh...

Anyone try Braid on XBLA?

Anyone have an Xbox 360?

Anyway there has been a whole lot of bzzz about the first big successful XNA developed game - especially the economics side of things.

So I gave it a whirl yesterday. Pretty impressive for a homebrew game with its side-scrolling, puzzley, time shifting mania. My head kinda hurt after a while but worth checking out for sure.

{Hee Hee Tee}

I've started so many games now. I play one of them per night, and rotate umm... nightly. (I learned to ro-TATE from Black and White by the way...) I'm on my second round of Mass Effect, second round of BioShock, eighth or so round of System Shock 2, first round of The Witcher Enhanced Edition, and first round of Crysis Warhead. Damned good the lot of them. I still haven't quite figured out why nobody is playing Mass Effect. It is seriously one of the best games ever. Easy to pick up and put down due to nice journal system, excellent action, excellent lighter-weight RPGing, best story and acting in some time as well. I'm hoping to finish all of these up by Oct-20th, when my copy of Dead Space is available to download. Anyone playing anything good right now? If not, you should be buying Mass Effect. :wtf:

I'm playing Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, and yes I'm caught up in another MMO. This one is not so time consuming, and is cleverly designed. The public questing system is pretty cool, as well as the open group feature. No more searching around trying to find groups to play with.

I have teh witcher, teh spore, teh mass effect (a.k.a MASS EFFECT!!!!), teh grand theft auto SanAndreas, teh battlefield 2, teh COD4, AND teh SILENT HUNTER!!! which is some submarine game...I just have been looking at the box for the submarine game...wondering why did I buy that? someday I may take the shrink wrap off. Oh yeah and teh HELLGATE london! I lost interest in all of them having only played COD4 through. I feel like I would rather program for some reason but lost interest in that again too...I am however currently obsessed with video editing for some reason - while I really don't care too much for doing the actual video editing part I am more into figuring out how to do it...currently playing with PowerDirector...pretty much the same as WMM but at least it doesn't degrade the quality of the output but it has it's own problems...

Mass Effect starts a little slow (to give you the background/story/etc.) Once you start getting into the plot-related missions, it's exquisite.

This actually goes in the sometime 09 games category.
The Ghibliness of it is enough to make me want to buy a DS. Plus it comes with an actual spell book...

Everyone that has Steam or a Wii should go get World of Goo right this very second. It's cheap, it's extremely fun, and it's easy to pick up and put down being a physics based pseudo-puzzle game. Damned fun!

My copy of Dead Space unlocks in the next day or two. It's been getting extremely good reviews. (like 90s, 10s, 5 of 5s, etc.) It looks like EA finally released a complete, well thought out, game from their own studios. Mass Effect was, but it was BioWare, not a standard EA team. So it looks a bit System Shockish, but third person, with a bit of Alien, Event Horizon, tossed in. The gameplay looks amazing. I think I'm going to like it more than BioShock. I've been hearing that it's frightening a lot of fairly hardened gamers, and it's been banned just about everywhere but here and Canada. It's already available for 360 and PS3, but I have a feeling the PC one will be a bit better. (and is out tomorrow) I grabbed mine from Direct2Drive (which is a very nice client-free digital distribution place (if you haven't used it I recommend it for anything you can't find on Steam.) Go Dead Space!

I have a theory about it. EA owns the rights to System Shock. They wouldn't let Irrational make a sequel, and they shut down most source-ports, updates, etc. that anyone tries to do for the old ones. I'm wondering if they took all their ill-gotten SS properties and turned it into Dead Space. They were supposed to have one of their teams make a third SS, but it dropped off the planet right around the time that Dead Space was announced actually. Hmmm...

Fallout 3 is next on my list, followed by Far Cry 2, (though I'll wait for a price drop on FC2.)
