I spent the past holiday weekend camping at Second Beach, very near to the sight of the old Monkey Lair. There are no signs left at all. There also is less drift wood on that section of the beach, although less is still quite a bit.
I think we might want to consider camping at either Third Beach, Oil City, or one of the other beaches in that area. Maybe even Cape Alava or Shy Shy (probably my first choice). The down side to those places is the hike in is a little longer. But we can handle it I am sure.

the hike to cape alava
is the bomb. it's like a 9 mile loop that goes right down to the beach. There are petroglyphs on some of the rocks there as well. I remember something about this being the westernmost point in the lower 48.....

That's right about the Western most point. It is 3.1 miles to hike from the the car to the beach. There is a loop you can walk if you want to go down to Sand Point which is another 3 miles down the beach and then 3 miles back to the car on a different trail.
The hike to second beach is a mere .7 miles. Third beach is 1.4 miles. Oil city is 2.6 miles. I can't seem to find good info on getting to Shi Shi beach, but I really think we should look into that. It is supposed to be the prettiest beach on the peninsula.
