Not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm enjoying the work of Bruce Goldish. I caught an impromptu concert of his when he was practicing for a tour he was about to go on. He was playing from an amp plugged in to the back of his van on top of the parking structure on state street in Santa Barbara next to Borders. Surprisingly good acoustics!
Anyways, if you're into nylon guitar or just awesome guitar skills, check him out. His new album is called Merlin's Leap. Mostly instrumentals.

Thanks!
Here's another for the list....

The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike

I've been digging this album alot lately... These guys are a rock band that have a sound similar to the Avalanches.
allmusic.com wrote:The group whips up a clattering, exhilarating collage of Northern soul horns meshed with sampledelic beats, plangent harmonica, lyrical piano melodies that bring Martin Duffy's work with Felt to mind (especially on "Feelgood By Numbers"), hard-charging '70s police drama funk, old-school hip-hop, and sincere indie rock. Everyone from Marley Marl to Sonic Youth is roped in to be borrowed from. It's all thrown together with a glorious sense of what works and what doesn't. There isn't a single misstep on the record and it is hard to pick favorites because every song is so blindingly good. full review

You guys should check out these two CDs:

Diplo and Tripledouble - AEIOU Vol. 1

Diplo and Tripledouble - AEIOU Vol. 2

The First on has some good soul music on there, think i heard the temptations on one of the tracks, if you like that kinda thing, check it out.

The 2nd is more like florida, but gets kinda out there at times, it has some good classical japanese music in there, its a must have.

I'll try and torrent them as soon as I'm done pilfering some files.

Guess what just surprised me. "With Teeth" - NIN

Well, it's not a drastic departure or anything like that, and while most of old Mr. Trent's albums sound nearly the same, this is the one that I'd pick. It's still got a nice edge on it, but overall the album is a bit more mellow (which I like.) It definitely isn't breaking any new ground, but as usual the production quality is impeccable.

The cool thing about this album, is that most of the synth work was supposedly done on a big modular synth. (for an example of this, take a look at this: http://www.synthtech.com/motm.html )

Good stuff. I haven't considered myself a NIN listener since I was about 18, but I'll be holding onto this album.

Strange eh?

I am also pleasantly impressed with the album. I find it retains the feel and polish of earlier work ans is very listenable - even if it is not a leap of progressive music (the way I think The Fragile was). I am very much looking forward to seeing them live at Coachella in a couple weeks.

I haven't contributed to this thread in so long probably because I feel like I listen to about everything new, but I don't discover much of it. I'll post extensively here sometime soon.

I've been promising it and thinking about it for a while now. There is a ton of great new music that is coming out right now and a lot of it has found its way to me in advance forms. One thing I have not been able to get my hands on yet that I am excited about is the forthcoming Audioslave album. Recent reports say the band has been covering both Soundgarden and Rage songs at their last few shows. I may just call my music seeing career good if I ever again get the blissful pleasure of hearing Chris Cornell sing Soundgarden tunes...mmmmmmm...

So what have I been listening to?

Trail of Dead and lots of em. The new album Worlds Apart is already a hot contender for one of the best progressive rock albums evar. One listen of track 5 "Rest Will Follow" and you will see what I mean. But like most great albums, this one is best ingested in a complete listening. Please... enjoy this one.

As mentioned above, I am quite happy with NIN's newest With Teeth and I am crazy looking forward to the show at Coachella this weekend - w00 w00t!! I am also still listening to The Arcade Fire whom I am number 2 most excited to see.

Bloc Party has quite recently been rocking my...err... square of residence. Their sometimes-mellow, always harmonic goodness is refreshing and relaxing.

The new Alkaline Trio album titled Crimson has got me really excited - but my intarweb advance is lacking in quality. Still, their early release "Time to Waste" is as respectfully catchy as anything it supersedes.

The new Gorillaz is gorillicious and shouldn't be missed. It is produced by superstar DJ Danger Mouse, whose hip-hop masterpiece Ghetto Pop Life with MC Jemini is still in my regular rotation (although his much better known Jay-Z mixup Grey Album is not).

The new Lullabies to Paralyze from recently Nick Oliveri-less Queens of the Stone Age does not suffer from the founding bassist's departure (reportedly given the boot by Josh Homme). If anything, Lullabies is a more mature sound from QOTSA, sounding bit more mellow at times and less poppy. I find it unlikely that QOTSA fans will be disappointed. Other good news is that Mark Lanegan is back for a couple tracks.

I've just started to get into old time Seattle mellow rocker Damien Jurado. I am still working my way through his catalog, but so far I am most impressed by 1999's Rehearsals for Departure. You might compare his music to Nick Drake's soothing acoustic sounds which I have also been enjoying. Jurado was always one of those names I saw around (like Deathcab for Cutie - who still get a fair amount of time on playlist) but never really checked out. Then a download of 1077TheEnd's stream of his amazing song "Ohio" prompted me to give him a second look. There is nothing better than discovering an artist that already has an impressive and diverse body of work to relish your way through.

Although this torrent (heh) of new rock has pushed them to the back burner, I still mood up with a good amount of trip-type-hop and ambient from faves like RJD2, Zero 7, Air, Prefuse, Quantic, Thievery Corp. and newcomer Ratatat.

...oh, and hip-hop? Mainly just some Handsome Boy, Promoe, Quasimoto, and the great new(ish) album I recommend from Ali Shaheed Muhammad.

I should also mention a week hasn't gone by in the last few years that I haven't listened my way through a Mars Volta CD. The release of Frances the Mute has only made it twice as hard for me to ever queue up anything else.

Mmmmmmmmm - lotsa good stuff right now. Sounds like there is more coming down the pipe as well. I'll try to update this a bit more frequently as I pick up new tunes.

I didn't know you were in to Air and Thievary Corp. Both are great to do lots of things to. Did anyone catch Air playing at Cochella last year? And the year before that I heard Thievary took the stage with a 15ish piece band. Even though they're a bunch of Frenchies, Air is dope. Do you have a favorite album? Moon Safari, Premieres Symphones, or Talkie Walkie??? Or the other ones? Have you heard of Jazzanova or Nightmares on Wax? "Mind Elevation" by the latter is way chill if you are digging that kind of music. It is classified by iTunes as Easy Listening...and that's got some validity to it. It's definitely easy on the ears and conducive to a mellow yet uplifting musical experience.

Common - Be With the majority of beats produced by kanye west and Common being as smooth and smart as ever... this album is an instant classic. A must own if you think this hip-hop fad is here to stay.

Nu:Tone - Brave Nu World Fresh DnB that falls in the same vein as High Contrast, both in a relatively new style of DnB which blends elements of funk, disco, and soul into DnB. I like it alot.

Edan - Beauty and the Beat
Recommended for folks that like Prefuse and/or Madvillian; features Insight, Percee-P, Mr. Lif and Dagha on rhymes. As an added bonus, Edan bears a striking resemblence to endar:
ImageImage

DJ Format - If You Can't Join 'Em...Beat 'Em
2nd full length album by Format featuring mostly Abdominal & D-Sisive on rhymes with one track featuring Chali 2na & Akil (from J5). This one has good beats and is a bit more light-hearted than the Edan album.

DJ Z-Trip - Shifting Gears
This one's been getting some radio play in the US; I'm still easing into it, but the tunes are growing on me. Good stuff.

Beck - Guero
I'm liking this return to the "Odelay" sound with the Dust Brothers on production.

Quasimoto - The Further adventures of Lord Quas is the 1st release in 5 years from Madlib as his alter-ego Quasimoto. Lately I can't seem to listen to anything other than this album... it's got it all. If you dig madlib you need to grab this album.

OK......it has been far too long with far too much amazing music pumping into my ears for me not to post.

The Mars Volta-Frances the Mute. Erin actually bought this for me, and I have listened to it nearly everyday since. This is an absolutely brilliant album that makes me reconsider what is possible with music. There is really nothing else to say here. Pure genius.

System of a Down - Mezmerize. Another procured for me by the wife, this album is also straight wonderful. Biting social commentary, Rhyming Gorgonzola with Gonhorrea, and some downright funky tracks make this another that I listen to quite often. I have to admit that I like the way Serj and Darren switched up the vocal duties on this record. I will most definitely be attending their show with The Mars Volta when it rolls through the NW.

Trivium - Ascendancy. I heard about these guys from Agent Bos, and while it took me a while to get into it, I am glad that I did. These boys have talent well beyond their years, and I'm looking forward to checking them out at Ozzfest if I go.

Mastodon - Leviathan. This album just rocks my world. I think that this is some very intelligent metal that is quite easy to listen to. A concept album that does not get bogged down by it's muse.

Matisyahu - Live at Stubb's. A buddy at work hooked me up with this album and I just adore it. This guy is a Hassidic who sings reggae and raps! Really quality, chill songs. (listening to this as I'm posting this) He sings great-spot on pitch most of the time, there's some really cool beatboxing on this too.

Recently, I have also been loving me some Roy Buchanan (AMAZING guitar player), Team Sleep, new QOTSA, new NIN, new DMB, new Foo Fighters, 213's "The Hard Way", Asst Ben Harper, Killswitch, Gwen Stefani's L.A.M.B, and some good old school stuff like Junior Mafia, Pantera, Sunny Day, Beasties, early Metallica, 40 OZ to freedom...the list goes on and bloody on

The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan.

What a great new CD! Got lots of experimental new sounds like the jazzy "My Doorbell" (Forgive me ED9K, it is track 3)and the gritty "Instinct Blues"

All in all, its a great CD as a whole, I suggest you check it out ASAP!

I picked up that Lord Quas (which Mr. Sparks mentioned above) awhile ago and have been equally loving it.

Also picked up a Battles EP recently. Reminds me of Mars Volta. I got the "B" EP which has one track which seems like someone sleeping underwater with the microphone tucked into their armpit. The rest of the tracks are pretty..."hard jazz"? "Freeform math metal"?

Also picked up a new Richard Cheese album...just for giggles.

It has been a very strange month without music. I have had my iPod with me - but I really haven't used it much at all - like maybe a half dozen times. So instead I have been inundated by the same 10 euro dance tracks that I would much rather forget at this point.

But I just nabbed the new Death Cab for Cutie CD - Plans - and couldn't be happier. I can't imagine any Death Cab fans being upset with the direction they are heading. 5 Albums in and still getting much better with each.

E.D. - I haven't checked out the BBQ Beetz Trio yet but will soon and then will report backatcha. You like anything in perticulur?
