I've decided...

Post by R3C »

... that I don't like Unreal Tournament 2004. It's got some cool looking levels, and it's fun to play for a bit, but not fun enough. I don't even think it's as fun with its 50 game styles as Doom 3 is with its 2 styles. And definitely not as cool as Quake 3. I think it needs to go. There's no place for it in this department, or in this university. Its theories are the worst kind of popular tripe, its methods are sloppy, and its conclusions are highly questionable. It is a poor FPS. (OK, so it's not that bad, but I don't think I'll be playing it anymore.) I think I'd rather play the original Unreal. McNevin, you have Return to NaPali right?

Not a problem. Some day I'll be really bored, walk up to the mailbox, and BLAM!!!! the discs will be there, and I shall rejoice. STUFF!!! I'll yell as I skip my way back down to my domicile.

UT2004 is just not that fun for extended periods of time. Yes, I think it has to go. It'll be in my next trade-in batch I think.

It's definitely tried the silky, and some of those levels look rather amazing, but still, I don't derive much in the way of entertainment out of it like I do with Q3A, or D3.

I think it comes down to the fact that I don't have as much time to play games anymore, so the ones I play either better be tip-top, or provide gobs, stacks, and piles of nostalgia.

I don't have time, space, and energy to maintain my collections anymore. I'd rather keep a collection of only my favorite games, for whatever system, for whatever time period.

I'm going to be doing some major collection overhauls in the console and arcade departments as well.

When I sit down in front of my computer, wanting to play an arcade game, I want to look at a list of games that I know I will like playing, have played, etc. I don't want to page through 5000+ entries, 50% of which are crap.

Anyway, yeah, I'm going to filter my games into one amazing collection of the highest quality. I'll call it the "Best Games Ever Collection" :D I'm going to have assistence with said project, so more than one opinion on the MAME stuff is applied to the collection. I've enlisted aid to go through all the fun and obscure Japanese games too, to make sure we don't lose anything good. I suppose I could dump a "Master collection as of build .85" onto a hard drive and stuff it in the closet or something like that, but the set that I actually have in use will be a LOT smaller... All series will remain intact as well. Even if there's a suX0r in one part of the series. :D

I seem to spend more of my ever decreasing free time maintaining the data collection rather than using it.

Why don't you, instead of deleting all those unused roms, just stick them in a "seldom played roms" folder so they are still around but out of mind?

I've already sorted all my collections, except MAME. It appears that the MAME madness must continue. First, there's not an easy way to update a partial collection. Second, there isn't a utility (that I know of,) that allows you to manage files at the same time as showing you the actual name of the game, and clone-parent properties. Ugh...

Can't do a seldom played folder because I'd need a similar file/ROM utility, and then it would be a nightmare sorting the collections at merge time.

I think I'm just going to keep going, maintaining, perfecting, honing, until I finally snap, and go on a rampage through the quaint yet bustling town of Issaquah. :D

   <--- Me and my other two personalities when the MAME shit goes down.

Just let me send you a 40GB drive or something to dump that on before you snap and delete everything but Mappy and MPE in an emuleptic fit of destruction.

Yeah, a 40GB drive is the smallest that will work now I think. It's nearing the 30 mark I think. I'm so tired of it all, but in order to use the newer versions of MAME, you have to have the proper dumps for that version. They're getting way into emulating 3D arcade games now, and while that's cool and everything, I wish they would have stopped at 2D, get everything working, then continue with 3D. Bleh...

Excellent work. Let me know if you can find the .85 ROMs. So far the newsjerks are unresponsive to my requests. (It's been out for nearly a week now.) I've got a perfect CHD collection now by the way.

I was just about post a post on the UT2K4 thread to organize a game. I'm a bit sad, J3RK. Why the sudden change of heart?

Well, I'm in Id mode now. I've got Q3A, D3, Q1, and more installed right now. I actually find them to be much more entertaining. Since I don't have an abundance of time to play, I'm only playing the ones I like best. UT2004 is cool, but I'd still rather play the other games.

It's a bit odd and I just can't put my finger on it, but there is something about the Unreal games that I always kept me from really getting into them like the Id games. It's odd cuz the unreal games always looked awesome and, in my opinion, had some bad ass game play elements. But in the end, it was always the Id games that kept me coming back for more.

With that said, anyone still down for a round of UT2K4 soon?

I really got into Unreal. I love that game. It's totally atmospheric. In fact, I think I'm going to install it.

I just started playing Wolfenstein 3D. I got a nice GL port, that lets you use mouselook, (only side to side as there is no up and down in the game,) and sidestep keys. It has a Q3 style console too. It's called NewWolf if anyone's interested. Once you tweak the graphics settings the way you want (I turn off the filtering because it's blurry,) and tweak your mouse sensitivity, it's quite nice.
