I figured as much. :D I've also tweaked out the .CFG file for maximum detail, speed, etc. What mode are you running in? And what settings? You can also set the maximum MP players in the CFG :D

It detects my hardware to run at 640x480 medium, what a croq o' shiznas

I couldnt stop the tearing until...

From: http://www.techreport.com/onearticle.x/7133
In my experience, setting vsync to "always on" in the ATI and NVIDIA drivers doesn't help. The game's default setting overrides the drivers, no matter what.

To turn on vsync, use the Advanced Options menu. Alternately, you can hit ctrl-alt-~ to bring down a game console. At the console, type "r_swapinterval 1". Then hit ~ to close the console. You should be all set, and the tearing should be gone. You can thank me later.

I'm running in 1024x768@60Hz. It looks pretty good, but somtimes it drops a frame or three.

Have you figured out how to increase the refresh? Guess it doesn't matter since its locked at 60FPS.

It runs surprisingly smooth on my 2 generation old 9700 pro. There are no noticeable drops in framerate. I've been running medium-quality (which was what auto-detect picked) at 1024x768 with v-sync on. I tried running the game with FSAA and there was a very noticeable drop in framerate but no big improvement of image quality.

The link i posted earlier says the auto-detect is almost too conservative.

Did you see this?

I'm running in 1280x1024. I turned aniso down to 4x in the CFG file, and it is silky smooth. I haven't seen a slowdown yet. Just got attacked by a pinky. It cornered me in a room and bashed the door in. :D Fun stuff. This game looks amazing.

I see noticible drops in framerate, where is the 4x anisotropic?

I might have to go to medium. :noway:

It's not scary like System Shock 2, but the relentless baddies coming out of the walls and ceilings is quite unnerving when you're down to two shotgun shells, a pistol, and 15 health. :D I've only completely died once, from the assault-rifle guys in the infirmary. Haven't died since, but I've gotten down to 6 health a couple times.

**TINY SPOILER**

I love the first bathroom scene too. (with the mirror and the base computer suggesting psych exams.) :D :D

McNevin: Open the .CFG file, and in the graphics area, there is an anisotropic filtering entry. You can set it to any of the standard settings. Also, there is a cache entry that's set to 20. I heard changing it to 96 helped the smoothness of the game quite a bit, and it seemed to work for me. I'm going to try it on Ultra detail when I get home today. :D There are some tweak guides in the forums on HardOCP, if you're interested. I found that just turning down aniso boosted my framerates by a ton, and everything still looks just as good. (I'm of the opinion that if you're at 1024 or above, the difference between 4x and 8x is only truly noticeable in a static screenshot.)

Anisotropic made a huge difference. It no longer goes 10fps when there is more than one imp attacking me at once. Now I'll have to try the cache.

That Scene with the pink demon was great; this game is so damn immersive.

Yes, it makes me happy. :)

SpiderChoki, and Seth are coming over on Saturday, with computers, so maybe you'd like to join us for some MP. There is an item in the CFG for changing the amount of players. We'd probably need a pretty crazy dedicated server though to do more than 4.

Oh, if you do that cache trick, you also have to set the entry above the cache amount to 1. You then have to increase the minum cache in KBytes or the game will crash to the desktop when you start it up for some reason.

There is another trick that may only work on Nvidia, but he wasn't sure if it worked on ATI cards or not. May want to try it as it gave most people a 5FPS boost:
If you own a newer NVIDIA card and are running the 61.77 drivers, this might give you a little speed bump depending on your resolution an other settings.

r_useDepthBoundsTest 1

Let me know how it works for you by posting your feedback here. I am unsure what impact it will have on ATI or if it is supported. I think this does a bit better job at culling pixels you never see.

I'm gonna eat the hell out of some pills... err... I mean, I'm gonna tweak the hell out of Doom 3, when I get home today. I'll post my findings and optimal settings for making it super fast in high detail 1024+

Maybe I'll just post my CFG file or something after I get satisfactory numbers.

I wish there was a way to force triple buffering in the game. It can be done with new ATI drivers, but not with the NV drivers. Triple buffering makes things a lot smoother. Triple buffering plus V-Sync is the best thing ever.

3nder will probably play Doom 3 with V-Sync off. Well, it will be the first game that will display just how bad tearing is. I tried turning off V-Sync yesterday, and it was the worst tearing I have ever seen. Eeeeekkkkk!!!

UPDATE: Doom3 shipped at 12:25 PM today, expected delivery Aug 5. Seems to be on schedule.

Yeah that tearing looked like shit. Go vsync!

How do i force triple buffer? I'm running the beta drivers.

I haven't used the betas, but they should be the same. In one of the pages there was a tab that brings up a few OpenGL options. There was a triple buffering option in it. I can't remember exactly how I got to it, but it is in the standard ATI control panel somewhere.

I dreamt about Doom 3 last night... and I haven't even played it yet!

I have nothing against Vsync - I have just not been introduced yet to its awesome power.

Ohhhh I am ready.

I can't believe you've never used V-Sync. You never used "Sync every frame" in Quake 3?

You've used it when using consoles and arcades. That's why the games on consoles are always so fluid. It's not because the consoles are "super powerful" or super optimized. They're just powerful enough to play their games synced to the TV's refresh.

It just draws one frame per cycle, instead of cramming a buffer full of partial frames.

140fps always seemed better than a measily 75... :shifty:

Anyway - It is set to game default, so if some games have it on by default I have been using it. You have to remember that I really haven't played much in the way of PC games for the last 2 years.

You should have been using V-Sync since Quake. :D No 140 FPS is not better if you're only getting 75 with different parts of the screen showing different frame data. I should take you a torn screenshot. It will look like the screen is divided up with different stuff in each section. Nasty bizniss. It's better if you card is capable of 140 instead of 75, because that means you'll never drop below 75. So the more it's capable of the better. (To a point.) Once your system is capable of playing a game without ever dropping below the sync rate, you need no more improvements. Until a new game comes out that kills your stuff again.

Doom3 overides the ati driver settings. Even if you set it to force always on in the advanced options, doom has the power to turn it off!

That boss was pretty cool right before then. :) Also, those heads are pretty nice. Especially when they distort things. WWWWWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had to cheat and give myself ammo once yesterday. I'm ashamed now. I was down to 5 bullets for my gun, and 5 health. I hadn't saved for a long time, and I just got to a new section (so no going back to a med-station.) I didn't want to play all the way from my last save, so I filled up my ammo. :shifty:

I'm now in the area that's a large portion outside, where you have to find oxygen tanks. I don't know if it's that big an area out there, but I just walked outside and it looked big enough.

Why is it that the team I'm trying to meet up with is always 2 seconds ahead of me? Can they not stop for 2 seconds so that we can team up and dominate this evil force a-team style? Every time I come around a corner, there they are...running from me. YOU FRACKIN BASTARDS! HOLD UP!

This game is a good example of what might happen if we let Sigma team get out of control...
