iD just released their in-house benchmarks!
The Ati x800 gets torn up by the Nvidia 6800s... wow.

John Carmack had some interesting comments in there as well...

It should be noted that all of the modern cards play the game very well, and benchmark scores should not be the be-all-end-all decision maker. Scores will probably improve somewhat with future driver releases, and other factors like dual slots or dual power connectors can weigh against some of the high end cards.
The benchmarking was conducted on-site, and the hardware vendors did not have access to the demo before hand, so we are confident that there is no egregious cheating going on, but it should be noted that some of the ATI cards did show a performance drop when colored mip levels were enabled, implying some fudging of the texture filtering. This has been a chronic issue for years, and almost all vendors have been guilty of it at one time or another. I hate the idea of drivers analyzing texture data and changing parameters, but it doesn't visibly impact the quality of the game unless you know exactly what to look for on a specific texture. On the other hand, the Nvidia drivers have been tuned for Doom's primary light/surface interaction fragment program, and innocuous code changes can "fall off the fast path" and cause significant performance impacts, especially on NV30 class cards.
A note on overclocking: it is very likely that overclocked configurations that "play everything else perfectly" will start to show problems on D3 due to new usage patterns. Everyone is of course free to do whatever they want with their own hardware, but don't complain to us...
Yeah, saw that earlier. ATI is in the middle of completely rewriting their OpenGL driver, so I assume that in the next couple of months, there will be a huge speed increase. The ATIs are still a bit faster for D3D. I was actually considering getting a 6800 because of this, but I think I'm going to wait until that driver comes out.
Think I might try and get me a 6800GT. Don't know if I can wait for ATI to fix their OpenGL implementation. I hate the 2D on Nvidia cards, and their color accuracy is not on the same level as ATI. Which is why I bought the X800. Didn't realize there would be that much of a difference though. The 6800 GT is outperforming the X800XT. Oh well. Hopefully there is a 6800 GT in stock around here.
Only with something shiny and new like D3. I can run Q3A at 300FPS but I'd be just as happy if it ran at a constant 85. It's that whole issue of refresh and sync. My card won't even run it at 60FPS synced with max graphics options. That's pretty bad for having just spent $400 on this card. Now, if I spend $400 on a 6800 GT, then I'll be able to sync to 60FPS and everything will be nice and smooth.

There's also a bit of "controversy" over ATI's drivers cheating with trilinear texture filtering...
Tom's Hardware did a techno-porn article about it: Link
Don't know how much of a biggie that really is. I personally couldn't give a rats ass, but the king of the hill in video cards is a cutthroat game, and if they don't come clean with good performance soon, they are destined for the #2 spot.

for the first time in my life, I'm reluctant to download a PC game
I figure since I decided long ago that I'm gonna throw down $50 for a copy of this game, I want it to be a whole new experience right out of the box...kinda like doing acid the first time I went skydiving.
McNevlar, I got your message...I'm still alive and shall contact you soon.
Gay Ray, how far to you live from hope st. in Santa Barbara? I'll be at the BMW dealership fixing motherfuckin motherboards all day tomorrow. Lets do some alcohol around mid day.

Well I have tuesday off, and have no other plans.
Wed, I have alot to do and probably will not even have time to open the box. I know this will scar my experience, but I dont want to have to wait a week to play.
Unless it comes on tuesday, im going to play the `// version.

There are about 3 or 4 torrents of it floating around now. I switched to a new one this morning, but I still have the original crawling along. The new one should finish in about 2 hours.... wooooooT.. Doom3 tonight!!!! I'll post more about it later.
Here's the link for the second torrent:
http://66.90.75.92/suprnova//torrents/2 ... 1).torrent
it's got about 740 seeders going, so it's moving pretty fast now.
...between those two torrents, there are 40,000 people downloading right now.
