I agree. Played the demo at a friend's house as my computer can't even dream at night about running it (although in a few weeks I will be back in Radeon 9800 land).

Which brings up a good question, what's everyone rocking these days? You got any new hot processing power J3RK? Kevlar? What about you beeeph?

Here's what I've had for a while:

P4 2.4 (800MHz FSB) Not overclocked.
Abit IC7 (i875)
1 GB (Dual channels of DDR 400)
2 80GB Barracuda IV
Radeon 9800 Pro
Audigy 2
16x Toshiba M1612 DVD
48x MSI CDR
Joymaster Mk II (Pictures should be up soon.)
Wireless network.
Etc.

This is probably the longest I've gone without major upgrading in years. I've been focusing more on musical gear lately. I'm about to go back into a computer cycle, and pick up a faster proc. (Or faster RAM so I can speed my current one up.) Then I'll pick up the new ATI architecture when it comes out. My system has left very little to be desired. It plays everything I've tossed at it perfectly. I sync everything to 85 Hz and it never seems to drop below that much, if any. Far Cry taxes it a little, but looks excellent.

What is looming on the horizon in terms of CPU tech? Is Moore slowing down?

apparently not: http://democratandchronicle.com/biznews ... ness.shtml

From Slashdot: "Since the weather in Rochester stinks, people spend a lot of time indoors making cool stuff. And at Rochester Institute of Technology, they have figured out how to make silicon chips with 38 nanometer rules..this is an order of magnitude better than what is standard at present. The process is called liquid-immersion nanolithography, a cool idea - starting with the commonly-observed phenomenon that things look bigger under water - they submerge the silicon wafer."

I suppose...

Post by R3C »

... the Athlon 64 is cool, and very fast, but I'm still in my Intel cycle. They just released the Prescott core not too long ago, though I haven't followed it much. I just got a new job though, so I'll be researching hardware again when I'm not busy. I don't tend to follow the computer industry when I have a couple weeks off.

Far Cry ... 30 bucks.
Fast System ... Free.
Raspberry less Mamba ... Like a buck.
Bottle of Patron ... 50 bucks.
2 packs of Turkeys finest ... Buy one get one free.
Girlfriend playing Harvest Moon and not bothering me ... Priceless.

For those that care, I work at www.mobliss.com testing Cell phone Games/Apps down in Pioneer square. Pretty cool fulltime gig. Index just bought them, Japans leading Cell content company.

... Matt and I were doing the same thing back in October. (Cell games and apps for AT&T MMode.) Howz it going? So have you been taking advantage of that Harvest Moon time by playing Far Cry? I've been playing that, UT2004, and numerous old DOS games... I need to get a 3.2GHz proc or something like that. Would be nice with the rest of my system. I think the next thing I'll buy though is the next ATI card.

I imagine you are pretty happy about that J3RK, congrats.

ClowAzz!! Good to hear from you buddy. Sounds like you've found a pretty sweet gig. We should try to hook up a get together for late May. Get some of the old HC crew together.

Kevin, you've been rockin that AMD for a while now. How does the system handle Far Cry? Is it pretty much the most taxing game out right now?

So is the only video card that has come out in the last 9 months the Radeon 9800 +pro/extra cool/overclocked but basically the same card card?

What is up with AMD?

9800s...

Post by R3C »

... are still the thing to have, though I don't know for how much longer... I imagine protos for the new cards R420 etc. are starting to roll out. I definitely plan to get one. I'm starting work in an hour, so once I'm all set up, I imagine I'll start poking around the hardware sites again in my spare time. I've been enjoying my nearly month-long vacation, so I haven't researched anything computer related during that time.

MS life certainly leaves plenty of free time for web "research." I didn't even use MSN Messenger before I worked there, but it is basically cumpolsory to being an employee there.

Ping me when you learn more. :shifty:

I'm ready to get a new card, I'll just hold onto this so you can decide if you want it, and such... I'm hoping ATI gets their cards out, and widely available quickly this cycle.

... need to get a faster proc. The 2.4C is doing well, but I want more speed without OCing. I'm thinkin a 3.0C will do just fine. And they're not too bad price-wise these days.

What are your views on the Extreme Edition? ...other than it is expensive as all fuck.

What board are you running? For that matter, what board am I running? I guess I could just go find that post.

I'm running...

Post by R3C »

... an Abit IC7 i875 dual channel board. It's quite nice... (The best dual channel chipset.)
A P4 2.4C 800MHz FSB
1 GB DDR400
Radeon 9800 Pro
SB Audigy 2

You are running an ASUS i845PE single channel board... (The best single channel chipset.)
A P4 2.8B 533MHz FSB
(I don't remember what RAM you have)
Radeon 9800 Pro
SB Audigy 1 (I think)

SpidermonX0r is running an MSI i865 dual channel board... (The second best dual channel chipset, though his supports Prescott and mine doesn't, unless I can flash my BIOS for that.)
A P4 2.4A 400MHz FSB
1 GB DDR 266
Radeon 9700 Pro
SB Audigy 2

Common parts are DVD ROMs and Seagate Barracuda IV drives.
