Music filling ED9K's ears as of late

Post by ed9k »

Zero 7-Awesome Portishead-esque trip hop-perfect for chilling out.

Death Cab For Cutie/The Postal Service-Ben Gibbard has been busy! This shit is really good though. Pure pop deliciousness

Unkle-What is there to say?

Modest Mouse-Their new album sounds great-especially "Float on"

Muse-Check them out for sure

Lot's of Bjork

Skkatter-Scottish (I think) DJ who excels at that "Windowlicker" broken CD crazy ass stuff......really cool remixes of crappy songs usually......

KEXP rocks the house down.

The Fire Theft/Jeremy Enigk/Sunny Day Real Estate-Jeremy Enigk has recorded and scored some songs for the movie "The United States Of Leland". So far three songs are available on the internet, and let me tell you, they are just spectacular. Buzzworthiest and I concur that these songs are Jeremy at his finest almost.

The Fire Theft are playing in Seattle on my birthday and I have tickets! I am really excited because this is the only show on the tour that they will be headlining. Very cool.

Just thought I'd represent.

A big YO for Zero 7! If you like them, you may also enjoy Four Tet. And how about Cinematic Orchestra? Even Lemon Jelly.

I have been listening as usual to loads of
Buddha Bar
Claude Challe and Ravin
Hotel Costes

I shall do my bit to hurt the music industry by downloading some of these ed9k-favoured tunes.
Oh shit

oooh, gotta get my hands on the new Modest Mouse post haste.

Music making its way to my ears lately follows...although some of this seems a bit old now.

Brand New - Deja Entendu: The second half of this album doesn't quite have what the first half does but the first half is some of the best new rock I have heard recently. Check out songs "Sic Transit Gloria ... Glory Fades" and "The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows."

The New Amsterdams - Worse for the Wear: I like bands with the word "new" in their name. If they sound like The Get Up Kids that's because they are (minus a couple members). Maybe we should just call them the Matt Pryor Bands from now on. This CD, released late last summer is much better than the new GUK that dropped earlier this month, but not as good as 2002's On A Wire.

Kanye West - The College Dropout: Jesus loves Kan-ye. And so does Jigga. But this dude has got beats fo sho and a tight cast of guest emcees keep the album moving along well. "Through the Wire" is the cut.

Something Corporate - North: I am finally starting to slow down my listening of this anthem packed pop-punk masterpiece. It will definitely go down as one of the albums that I listened the shit out of.

I gotta admit, I still listen to The Mars Volta as much as ever as well. Time to get my new music on I think though.

Ahhhhhhhh!

The Modest Mouse is everything I had hoped for. Consistent! How many good albums has Isaac Brock put out. The CD doesn't drop until next week right? The copy I grabbed seems to be a bit lo-fi.

Minus the bear: "Highly Refined Pirates"

This is Jake Snider from SR522/Sharks keep moving's new group, which has Dave Knudson (the old guitar player from Botch) in it too. Really cool music......Dave's guitar playing is just off the hook

Check them out for some good old style Old Firehouse style action:

Speaking of OFH, The mighty Alkai Diggins will be there April 30:

I may have to return to the old stomping grounds....(I can't even remember the last time I was there)

The coffee shop I do homework in on campus plays the Shins' Chutes too Narrow album which I have enjoyed lately and may download.

Sadly, I have found myself humming tunes from the Darkness.... I am such a product of the late 80s...sickening....

I remember listeing to Pinkerton the day you picked it up in the Volvo. I have always liked the odd Weezer song but never been in to their albums. Interesting to see such a revival for a 10 year old album.

Thank You, Thank You, THANK YOU!!!!

THE POSTAL SERVICE!!! Amazing! That CD is sooooooo good. Its got such a cool 80s new wave electronic feel strongly rooted in NW emo. I almost teared up during "Such Great Heights." That song is so amazing and I just kept thinking how fuckin fantastic it is to find new music you like so much right off the bat. It was like I just popped my first Built To Spill CD in or something. When the female vocals come in... DAMN! So good. I love finding new music! Thank you!!

Downloaded a couple Death Cab CDs as well. Great stuff, but not quite the magic of The Postal Service. Minus the Bear reminded me a bit of Hum. Haven't heard from them in a while.

Glad you liked The Postal Service! I had a hunch you'd like that......

Hum "broke up" (there is an internet rumor that they never really split up), but Matt Talbott was in a band called Centaur for a while a couple of years ago, but now it looks like he's running a recording studio :

http://www.gwrecordrecorders.com/index.htm

Tim Lash is playing with Glifted

Jeff Dimpsey is playing with National Skyline

God would surely have smiled on us all if Hum ever found it in their hearts to put out another album.......

I had the distinct honor of seeing them at RKCNDY when they were supporting Downward is Heavenward.....I wasn't really into them until that night. Totally off the hook greatness.........

Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh!!!!

I am so amazed by this Postal Service album. I just have to post again.

I have listened to it only 4 times (I am trying to savor it) and every time I hear it it gets better. Every track!! It is such different music, I don't know who to recommend it to. All I know is that is is by far the best thing I have heard in a really long time. The upbeat tempo, groovy synths, brilliant lyrics, masterful production... sooooo good. J3RK, I think you might enjoy giving this a listen if you get the chance.

After hearing Jenny Lewis's work on the CD I decided to check out her main band Rilo Kiley, which I already happened to have on my pod. It is a bit hit and miss, but the better tracks on their latest, The Execution of All Things, are quite good.

Let me reiterate for those that aren't paying attention:

POSTAL SERVICE = UNBEFUCKINGLIEVABLE

I feel so lucky to have discovered both this band and the amazing movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind in the same week.

Postal Service will be playing at this year's Sasquatch festival, which appears to only be happening one time. The Gorge, Memorial Day weekend (Sat 5/29).

Joining them are Thievery Corporation, The Roots, Built to Spill, and others.

Sasquatch!

A-HA!! I knew I had heard "Such Great Heights" before. That track is used for Bobby Meeks's segment in the Robotfood snowboarding flick LAME. That movie and indeed that segment have got to be some of the most beautifully coordinated sports/music video work ever done. Pure art.

So, some stuff to add as of late:

Don Caballero-Wow these guys are amazing. Instrumental math rock pioneers. So good I can't describe it. Their drummer was/is (they broke up) amazing-Damon Che-Check out some tracks here:

http://www.epitonic.com/artists/damonche.html
http://www.epitonic.com/artists/doncaballero.html (You'll find the tracks near the bottom of the page in the middle)

New Craig Wedren/Baby!!!!!! Craig is the lead singer for Shudder To Think (who've always been one of my faves), and has posted some really great stuff on his site. The Baby tracks are interesting-but his voice more than makes up for the plainness......He scored Laurel Canyon, High Art, First Love, Last Rites, Velvet Goldmine, The School of Rock, Roger Dodger, etc. Such an amazing musician.

Along with DEP, Planes Mistaken For Stars, Rocket From The Crypt, Sharks Keep Moving, The Locust, The Weakerthans, MC Paul Barman, Lagwagon, Sunny Day Real Estate, Blackstar, Bjork, CKY, among many others.
