Kaiser SuSE Lives!!!!!!!
Kaiser SuSE Lives!!!!!!!!!
I've been having quite a fun time with Linux - although was not too happy with Lycoris, Mandrake, or Damn Small Linux... But then I tried SuSE 8.2!
Pretty fun - pretty weird install though...SuSE doesn't make .iso's available for download. I downloaded 6.4GB in 6006 files across 57 directories and then did a network install via my ftp site but it wasn't too bad.
Anyway - will now do best impression of Linux head:
I am teh Linux Mastar!!!!!
Mozilla is GOD!!!!
REAL men use FVWM!!!!!
-l2icks0r! (aka Kaiser SuSE Mastar!!!! )
Then I'll have to...
... be the realistic person, who says, "Yes, that's nice how efficient, and nifty it is, and all that but what software have you got for it?" [TEE HEE HEE] I know it has its place, but bleh. If only Cubase ran in it. I'd build a Linux PC for doing audio work. Alas, no Cubase, no VST support, no me. I suppose it would be cool for a little client/server media playback type of situation, which I'm going to guess is what you're doing? (Just based on snippets of Rixler computer use data that I have.)

actually...
there is a "Fuck-ton" of free applications free & commercial. Software is not really the issue at all in that sense although there is a severe lack of kernel modules(drivers). Forget about playing 3D accelerated games though - linux has DirectFB but 3D support is still experimental.
Sooner or later down the road there will be pro audio for Linux as there is a new sound API, so sayeth the Seth, and that should make linux a viable platform for pro audio without retarded latency issues like windows has - and the software will be free and designed like a popular commercial app...
I'm just totally sick of windows for programming, maint., reliability, and MICROSOFT!!! Kill them!!!!!! I won't even use the KDE environment!!! Is too much like windows! Also, I know way too much shit about nothing useful just to maintain my systems - I should have never had to learn about all that crap... anyway - even so I will probably always have a windows box.
Linux isn't 1000% wonderful though - it just sucks less than windows for a lot of things...

It sucks...
... less, and more at the same time. I have no latency issues in Windows now. I can set my ASIO latency to 5 or 10 ms with no problems these days. I would be perfectly happy to make a Linux audio box, but I HAVE to have VST support. If the pro-audio bizniss will eventually allow software which is VST compatible, then by all means I shall use it. Until that happens though, I have to use Windows. I don't really have any stability issues in Windows these days, but I remember a time when I did. I don't really need that many new 3D games to run (though a lot of them do run in under Windows emulation, and through Mesa (A GLish layer I think.) There are more than enough Linux binaries and source available for console and arcade emulation too, so I'd be pretty happy. It's just that music thing holding me back.

I've actaully never really liked windows that much
and recently I've just been getting totally sick of all the problems I have had. I think most people don't realize what they put up with because over time it's just amazing what you get used to. I haven't played any PC games for almost a year now and the last one was BF1942 so I don't miss that at all. The only real reason I need a Windows based PC is to use developer studio. I HATE win32 - and i've always hated it. It's not a modern API however the C#/.NET stuff is not so bad but it's just not as supported or accepted yet because of whatever reason.
Heh, "I can set my ASIO latency to 5 or 10 ms with no problems these days" - why the fuck should you have to even know what the fuck ASIO latency even is... this is what I am talking about - you are used to dealing with this kind of stupid retarded shit.
Anyway - this whole Windows VS Linux thing has been played out before countless times so don't think I'm "converting" or something. The cool thing to do is to not make the decsion about staying with one OS over the other - JUST USE BOTH and SHUT UP!!!
