IGN - Top 25 Xbox(1) Games

Post by enderzero »

IGN Has released their Top 25 Xbox(1) Games.

While my boxes are certainly used more now for their media and emu uses, I sure did have some fun with the system - as pretty much all of us on this here forum did. So what are your top games for the classic box?

My top 10:

10. Amped - Narowly nudging out Burnout 3: Takedown Amped set a new high bar for snowboard sim with very realistic tricks and the most accurate flying down the mountain feel of any boarding game ever.

9. Halo - Since I didn't play it all that much it won't top my top10 like it probably top's most (IGN included), but I do recognize its importance - plus footrace mode is the bomb.

8. SSX Tricky - While nuthin like the sim-ness of Amped, Tricky provided many hours of flying off the board, backflippin' fun.

7. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - Who would have thought when we started playing this game that it would turn out so great? Take the best puzzle elements of Tomb Raider add the world of the PoP franchise, sprinkle in some cool time shifting innovations, and slap it all in to one of the most cinematic storylines ever in video game history. Golden!

6. Jet Set Radio Future - My list tends to favor innovation and this game still stands as one of the most fun and original games ever. Just thinking of it sends natsukashi chills. Where is the next JSR Game?!? I should go replay this for a 3rd time.

5. Project Gotham Racing - The click click of kudos has so become part of our world that I think about it every time I get a little loose in my car. Plenty of fun with this awesomely difficult game that was part racer, part performance driving sim.

4. Dead or Alive 3 - While Soul Calibur for the DC might still hold my top favors as best fighter ever, DOA3 was certainly the most fighting fun I have had on the ol' box - and definitely the best looking.

3. Azurik - While it is "obviously the worst Xbox game ever," it is certainly one of my favorites. Innovative in its magic system with rich and sprawling worlds and a great nonlinear path. It is a shame that although one of the best adventure games ever, almost no one played it. He was blue after all.

2. Psychonauts - I can't imagine anything Tim Shafer doing as not being brilliant. His worlds are so rich and fleshed out and this is a perfect example. But the gameplay and level design is where he really shines. The feat of creating a game where every level is completely different, and more brilliant than the last - and works with the advancing gameplay. Earning new powers, advancing the story, exploration - all are perfectly balanced.

1. Top Spin - Never ever have I had so much fun with a multiplayer sports game. Simply perfectly balanced, once someone has a few games under their belt they can compete with the best. A good volley in this game can get players to the very edge of their seat and then falling back onto the floor when the point is scored. Ratchet it up to 4 players and it is even better. Simply the most fun I have had on the Xbox.

Others want to tackle the challenge?

IGN also did a top25 of all time for PC Games, Gamecube (many of which I must play), GBA, and PS2.

Speaking of KUDOS:

Racing games promote risky driving behavior: study
After playing the games, the subjects were assessed on a standardized and widely accepted test of risk taking, the Vienna Test System. Again, this part of the study found that men were more likely to take risks in traffic situations following playing racing games than neutral games. Women, on the other hand, were not affected.
