New PC decision

Post by enderzero »

I am building a PC for a guy I know. I want it to be able to play games, but he is more concerned with the price than anything, so I am just trying to squeak some gaming performance in there. Here are a few options I have been thinking about:

Option 1 - $154
Athlon XP 2000+ (1.67) $65
Chaintech 7NIF2-Summit nForce 2 MoBo w/ video $89 pic

Option 2 - $169
Athlon XP 2000+ $65
MSI KM2M VIA KM266 ProSavage DDR $62 pic
Geforce 4 MX440 32MB SDR $42

Option 3 - $174
Intel Celeron 2.0GHz (400MHz FSB/128K) $67
MSI 651M-L SIS651 $65 pic
Geforce 4 MX440 32MB SDR $42

Other AMD Motherboards I was thinking of going with:
Asus A7V8X-X VIA KT400 $64 pic
Asus A7N266-VM AA nForce 220D $63 pic

What do you techies out there think?

I had a terrible experience with my last Asus mobo (note: steer clear of the P4S8X). It's now become a $100+ paperweight, as i've replaced it with an intel board which is rockin... and came with 5.1 audio onboard.

I don't think the geforce is gonna go very far.... tell your buddy to ebay a Radeon, or something a little juicier than an MX.

If I had to choose from your options tho.... I'd go for #2.

Ask him if he wants to buy a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB with everything for $250. I'll bring it up this weekend. Believe me, he wont find a better deal anywhere else and he wont have to worry about buying another video card for at least a year. And if he doesn't and anyone else is interested, tell me before thursday morning when I leave.

As cheap as Chaintech boards are, I've actually read some pretty good reviews on the 7NIF2 board. And we all love nForce2!
