The Castlevania thread...

I've been everywhere I can go currently. I don't know if I'm missing a power, or item, or what, but there are about 5 places that I can't get to because of things like pillars, walls, floors. Everywhere I've gone so far is completely filled out on the map. I've been through the floating areas, clock tower, etc. (above the castle,) the sub areas (caves, arena, etc,) I'm at 80%, and only about half or less of my powers are filled in. I can tell if a room has time stopped, I can slide, I can double jump, and dash backwards. I've got a ton of soul powers, (both water powers,) and lots of attacking. There are a few areas that look like you should be able to pass through (map-wise,) but they are either unreachable, or blocked. Does this game have something like the boots from symphony of the night, where you can jump straight up about a screen and a half? Or perhaps something that let's you walk through certain types of barrier? There's also a door with some black bubbling cloudy stuff, that knocks me back, so I don't know how to get in there either. (Unless that leads to the throne room or something.)
85% done. Still don't have any new abilities (besides more soul powers.) I can turn into a bat now though, and that has helped me get to most of the places that I couldn't before. Still some areas I can't get though. I fell down from above the waterfall, (since I can fly up to the top now,) and I still can't get into where that armor is. The waterfall still blasts me out. I also can't get into that door with the black bubbling cloudy business on it. I'm going to do a little more batting around though, and see where it gets me. There aren't many places left to go. There are 4 or 5 ability slots open, and you'd think that at 85% that most of them would be filled. I must be missing something major.
98.7% complete Wooooo Wooooooo!! Excellent game this.
I think all I can do now is go to the throne room and tighten the screws one notch below excruciating. Then I've got some more things to do. There are some powers you don't get until the very end, so I'm wondering if you can play through the game again with all the stuff you got or something like that. I just got the hippogriff jumping power. There are several different endings, so I'm going to have to make a save, back it up, and try them all.
***Waterfall Spoiler***
To get behind the waterfall, you have to do exactly what I already tried, but I did it wrong. You have to use Undine so you can walk on water, then you have to use either Manticore, or Curly (because they can dash) I tried it once with Curly (because that's what the marking on the wall looks like, but I didn't start far enough away to gather enough speed to get through the waterfall. There is actually no way to fall through to it. There is a nice pirate cave down there.

Beat it down with all of the endings.
***Black bubbling door spoiler***
Turns out that the black bubbling door is only if you beat Graham the proper way and turn into Dracula yourself. You then have to go destroy some things in the Chaos Realm which is through that door. Only Dracula can go through it. Then you get the nice ending.

Time to embark on the next CVania game. I think Circle of the Moon is next. It's supposed to be very hard. I was actually kind of upset when I beat AoS because it was so fun. Well, I unlocked some extra play modes by getting the different endings, so I suppose I can still play it a bit. I get to use Julius Belmont now. Choki is playing HoD, so I'll save that one for later, (even though I have 3 trillion save slots available.)
AAAAAACCCCCKKKKKK!!!!! Circle of the Moon is harder than Super Castlevania. FriXIng hard. The movement and control are like the older Castlevania games, but it moves way faster. (The jumping style is also like the old ones arc-wise.) That combination makes it difficult on the action side, instead of the exploration and item gathering side. It's going to be a tough one to beat. I hear it's rather rewarding though. I haven't even found the first save-room, so I have a feeling I'm going to have to play the whole beginning again.

I just got to the point in HoD when the map doubles. w00t! Exciting! And now I get to fight the Armored Flea Mans as well. He has got to be the best Castelvania enemy evar! (no chance of a GIS for that sucker)spidermonkey wrote:I like Flea Man and armored Flea Man...
The official Castlevania thread!!!!!
Did we already have one of these? I'm too lazy to check.
Started playing Harmony of Dissonance last night. I'm about 50% of the way through. It's quite fun. Not quite as good as Aria of Sorrow, but very cool anyway.
Has anyone gotten anywhere with Circle of the Moon? Last time I tried to start this one, I found it to be incredibly difficult. (as in, couldn't get more than a few screens into the game before dying) I don't remember any of the other CVanias being this difficult. The SNES one was pretty hard, and Rondo of Blood is a mild workout, but neither even compare to CotM. Perhaps I was doing something wrong. (I seem to remember reading that it was quite a bit different than the other modern ones.) Well, it's next on my list anyway after I finish HoD. After I complete them, I think it's time to get me a DS.

Not to mention it contains most of the information in my last post. It's been about a year. The Mist passed right into my brain, blocking my memory of CVania discussion.
I assumed that it would have been pushed off the first page, so I only looked from page 2-6. (suppose I could have used search, but that would make too much sense)

The castle seems a bit smaller overall. AoS took me a few weeks of on and off play to beat (100%) I got to around 50% last night in about 4 hours of play with HoD. I'm up in the clock tower right now, though I still have some exploration to do of all the areas I can't currently get to with my equipment/spells. It looks like there is probably going to have to be one of those super-jump things (where you jump all the way up against the ceiling.) There are some spots I can't get to with double jump, and it doesn't look like you can change form in this game. I actually want to play AoS again. I've never played SotN through though, so that may be the next one. I'm going to hold off on CotM for as long as possible.
Ok, now I know what you're talking about by doubling. I figured that's what the standard key-hole rooms were for. I finally got to the main portal in the clock tower. (you can use the key-holes to switch too, but the map didn't actually double until I went in the main portal) The game is rather big. Still not as big as AoS though I'm pretty sure. I haven't put much more into HoD since I'm playing DoS now, but I'm at a logical pause-point where I'll still know what I'm doing when I go back to it.
DoS is probably the best CVania game ever. I'm still only about 60% through it, and I've been playing non-stop since I got the DS. I'm currently playing it more than Quake IV or F.E.A.R. Such a good game. There are some other cool uses for the touch-screen besides the seals. They are actually a bit more than gimmicks too. There are actual spells that you can use the stylus for. This game is nearly worth the price of the DS system, so if you're a CVania player, then you must pick up the DS. Just sell your GBAs and buy the DS. They aren't much more expensive than the SPs were when they were the top-item. Keep all your GBA games for it too. They look better on the DS screen.
So, I'm wondering what I should do about all the recent 3D CVanias. I'm thinking about buying them up. I'll run the PS2 ones on an emulator when one is ready, and I suppose I can play the XBox one on the 360 when I pick one of those up. This is one collection that I feel I must stay on top of. I'm losing interest in keeping MAME up to date. I've actually taken to just downloading the whole set every 10 versions or so. It's easier than merging every 5.

I started to merge my mame, i had 6 sets to merge. I got it started and mamemerge crashed. I then decided that it could wait a few more sets, until i got the gumption to do it again!
I totally want the xbox cvainia, but I heard that the previous PS2 one was not so cool. I would like to try it, but I kind of lump it with the nintendo 64 version, and sweep them under the rug. Wonder if the Dreamcast version would have been any good, guess we will never know.

I had a big long 6 hour runup and beat HoD on the bus ride back from Zurich last night/this morning. I am 1 furniture piece away from complete completion and a couple relics which I may go back and search for one of these days.
HoD: Worst Story and Dialog of any CVania game.
Also, while it might not be bigger than AoS, it takes longer because there is so much more running around looking for where to go next. Because fo this I was so leveled up that no one could hurt me for the last few hours. I could just power slide through every enemy and kill them. Still fun but I won't remember it with the fondness of AoS.
You know I have never beat SotN...

I haven't beat SotN either. I think that one is next on my list. The problem with that one, is that it has worse dialog than HoD, and it's spoken. Eeeekkkk... But in all other aspects it is quite cool. (Not to mention it's a direct sequel to Rondo of Blood, which is in the top three on my list.) In fact, it would be number one, but I like the weapon/soul power system of AoS and DoS. (and to a degree SotN)
