Upcoming MOVIE Hype
This thread is dedicated to a word or two about whatever film looks like it might have some potential. Post here if you stumble across a particularly good trailer that needs checking out.
Shopgirl (Site - incl trailer | RT)
I think the trailer for this Steve Martin written film starring Martin, Claire Danes, and Jason Schwartzman is particularly well crafted (including the Death Cab soundtrack). Unfortunately the critics don't think the film matches. It is interesting how similarly this film resembles Lost in Translation from the look of the shots down to the fonts used. Anyone see director Anand Tucker's last critically acclaimed film, Hilary and Jackie?

Sayuri (Japanese Release trailer)
Two English speaking Chinese actresses star in a film taking place in and purely dealing with Japan. hmmmm...
It is interesting to see the differences between the US and Japanese trailers. Here is a Variety article about the campaign

Legendary Kung Fu Trio to Reunite After 18 Years
Source: korea times
The famous martial-arts trio of Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao will reunite in a new movie as early as this month, Jackie Chan said yesterday.
I did write the script for the new film myself, but it is likely to be directed by someone else, said Chan without unveiling the title of the new movie, during an interview with Yonhap News Agency. It’s going to be a quite unique comedy film, which nobody has ever seen before.
The world famous action star added that the new film is about a big comedy surrounding a baby in Hong Kong and said he is considering casting a Korean actor.
In the 1980s, the three action heroes starred in several kung fu comedy hits produced by Hong Kong’s Golden Harvest, including Project A (1983), Wheels on Meals (1984) and Dragon Forever (1987).

Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That - indieWIRE story
What a great concept. The Beastie Boys handed out 50 video cameras to their fans at a show at Madison Square Gardens a year ago. Then MCA took all the footage and put together this concert vid/docu. It comes out next spring.

The Beautiful Country Site (incl trailer)
This is the story of one man's search for identity as he travels from his native land of Vietnam to find his American G.I. father (played by Nick Nolte). I guess it is out on DVD now. Has anyone seen it?

Syriana trailer
This movie came out last week but I totally missed any pre-release hype. It is a good-sized budget action thinker about the oil industry directed by Traffic writer Stephen Gaghan. It looks to have a good cast and had been received quite positively.

I am very excited that Yuji Yamada's final installment of his samurai trilogy, Bushi No Ichiban (aka Love and Honor), will be premiering at the Tokyo Fest this month! Hopefully it will get sub'ed up in time for late winter fests.

If I was goin to SXSW I would be looking at these films:
The Gits – Docu about the Seattle band whose front woman was murdered
The Lookout – Scott Frank heist film.
Doubletime – Dir. Premier jump roping docu could be good.
Campaign – A docu that goes inside a Japanese regional election.
Big Rig – Doug Pray’s (Hype, Scratch, Infamy) latest docu about truck drivers.
Confessions of a Superhero – Docu about the dressed up superheroes on H-wood blvd.
Flakes – Zooey Deschanel in a film by the director of Heathers. If it is good it will get distrib, if not well…

Manufacturing Dissent – Docu about Michael Moore & politics circa 2004.
Elvis and Anabelle – potentially sweet romance between a beauty queen and a mortician.
Does Your Soul Have a Cold? – Docu about anti-depressants in Japan.
Pretty in the Face – An obese and insecure 26 year old woman falls for a equally unattractive 14 year old boy. If done well it could be an interesting train wreck of a story.
Itty Bitty Titty Committee – How can you not see a movie called this about a girl who joins a radical punk-feminist group with a female director?
Diggers – Paul Rudd and others play clam diggers in this comedy set in the 70s
What Would Jesus Buy – I guess I am attracted to films with good titles – this one is a docu about consumerism at Xmas time.
Audience of One – Had to just pull the logline for this docu: A Pentecostal minister receives a vision from God to create an epic science fiction movie based on the bible story of Joseph, sending he and his followers on a journey of extreme faith.
Great World of Sound – Craig Zobel’s (Homestar Runner) narrative film about “sound sharking.â€
Knocked Up – A Judd Apatow gala premier.
Smiley Face – Greg Araki’s Sundance fave about a girl (Anna Faris) who gets too high.
Everything’s Cool – Sundance Docu billed as the answer to “Now what do I do?†after watching An Inconvenient Truth.
1 More Hit – Docu about J Swift’s (producer of the Pharcyde) crack addiction and attempt at recovery
I’m a Cyborg But that’s OK - New Korean film by Chan-wook Park (Oldboy).
The Gits – Docu about the Seattle band whose front woman was murdered
