LCD Monitors

Post by Beeeph »

I'm thinking about selling off redundant equipment like my TV, DVD player, stereo amp, etc. and picking up a nice new widescreen LCD monitor for my computer. I've been looking around and it seems that Dell is, undoubtly, putting out the best product, mostly in terms of price. In the 24" range, their monitor has the best price, sitting around a grand. Whereas other 24 inchers sit somewhere between $1500 and 2Gs and don't look nearly as clean and cool, IMHO. The samsung syncmaster looks just as nice and has the same specs as the dell, but runs about $500 more than the dell. All others that I've seen look dumb and are too expensive, but I haven't looked too hard. Has anybody else done their LCD 101 homework and, if so, can I copy?

I know a guy who just got one of these for his computer and he seems to be quite happy with it.

Nice. That's pretty cheap, and the native resolution is high enough for a decent computer display. May have to get one for my living room.

Doesn't seem too appropriate for a primary display though which I think is more what beeeeph has in mind (is that assumption correct?).

I have not done a ton of recent research but last time I checked Dell's were indeed the top dog for all around performance and price.

I stopped reading Maximum PC in 2004, but their end of the year round up ranked the HP f2304 as the best LCD available. But at $1900 street price and some miced reviews out there I would be skeptical. Sony has a nearly idnetical LCD P234 similarly priced I would check out if I was thinking of going the 23" wide route.

indeed. for an LCD that's 24" or bigger, I'd want a native resolution of at least 1900x1200...which seems to be native amongst every 24 incher I've come across. still 32" LCD for $1200 ain't a bad deal, thanks saucy. I found a refurbished sony 24" widescreen CRT for $400. If I can find an apartment big enough to hold it, I might throw down a bid.

I'd use a 32" for my primary display if I had an appropriate studio/computer room. You just need to be able to sit back from it a bit. Some big studios use projectors for the primary display, so you can sit behind your big console. Anyway, say you mounted the 32" on the wall, and pulled your desk out about 18-24 inches. You wouldn't need a monitor sitting on the desk, so you'd have the whole desktop for whatever, and a very big screen to look at. That's my plan for when I have a dedicated room.

I have moved to the next level, and finally acquired an LCD monitor.

I decided to go with the Dell 2005fpw.

Got it for the amazing price of $397, via a cool site www.techbargains.com

Nice McNevin. Think I'm going to do that myself soon. My new job should allow some toys. Think I'm going to take care of the musical toys first though.

nice! If I didn't just get a sweet syncmastar, I would have gone with that dell. I've heard it's the exact same hardware as the apple cinema display.

It actually sounds very much like you weren't speaking with a human. With some much repetition, it seems like it was some automated bot, that caught the words "Dead Pixels" and went to town. :D

"I understand your concern Dogbone, but I'm retired now. I have to do the needful. Please don't hit me with that +O anymore!"

Maybe it was one of Bender's hooker-bots.

Well... LCD #2 just arrived. This one is Revision 2, instead of Revision 1. Which is what I wanted. The monitor backlight is way more even, at least as far as I can tell in the daytime. There is one dead pixel, but thats better than the 3 I had with the other one. its out of the way, and ill prolly never notice. Yeah, i think its a keeper!
