So I went out to a good sushi restaurant today called Tommy's... It was much better than anything I have had in the past and not too expensive although I spent just over $20 for one maki and two nigiri. Fresh toro was not available and supposedly won't be for another month or so and this place won't use anything frozen.

For nigiri I chose Hamachi and Awabi, and for maki I had a rainbow roll.

The Awabi(albalone) was not to my liking at all but it was probably good if you like tougher chewey fish. (2 pieces for $8.00)

The Hamachi was very good - the fish was totally soft and flavorful...very nice. (2 pieces for $4.50)

The rainbow roll was amazingly good and was wrapped in what looked to be about four different types of fish which were all very very good. I was expecting it to have some avacado as well but it just had all fish instead. It did come with it's own special sauce too instead of soy. Very satisfied with it - so yummy. (1 roll for $8.00)

The rice was about the best quality I have had - it was very soft and not overly vinegarized. It was very good.

What's crazy is at the QFC by my place a rainbow roll costs $9.20, doesn't come with "teh sauce", and is smaller. The QFC version did actually look more artful and had avacados though - but that really doesn't matter as much as the taste. Tommy's was much better and cheaper so I'll only ever buy a rainbow roll from QFC if that is all I can get - because the sushi chefs are only there earlier in the day so after about 6pm the sushi has been sitting around for hours and the quality has degraded quite a bit...earlier in the day it's still pretty good except for the damn high fructose corn syrup added!!! I hate that...there was none in the Tommy's sushi...

So overall very satisfied. I definitely prefer maki over nigiri though - the reason is not for the economical value but because it's much more interesting food. It's the same reason why I prefer comibination pizza to cheese only. Sure the cheese could be tip top and the pizza could taste amazingly good but it'd be better with more ingredients.

Next I will have to try Kikuya...

You are prolonging our discussion by not going to I Luv Sushi. We've been talking about this for ages now. I want you to go there, and see why I like it damnit! You doubt that it's as good as I say it is, but haven't actually tried it. Now hurry yourself over there during lunch hours (so it's less expensive,) and tell me how you like it. NOW!!! :D

I'm totally certain I will love the sushi at I love sushi because I love sushi. :grin: The only reason I didn't go today was because I had a recommendation from yet another sushiphile who has eaten at both ILS & Tommy's many times (he works 1/2 mile from ILS) and he said that Tommy's was better because of the level of scrutiny Tommy uses in selecting the seafood. I'd definitely say the fish was very very good at Tommy's too although I really wanted to try some toro - except you can't get it fresh right now according to Tommy so will have to see if ILS has some that isn't frozen...

Choooo takai yo!!! That shit is expensive. Hamachi is a bit fishy for me. I could sure go for some shinjuku 90Y kani-sarada tho.

I vow to prolong no more once there is a plan in place to go - such as: Sushitroniphile3030 could go with me and I'll treatz0r! Or if you are unavailable for consultation perhaps spahd0rmonx0r could go on your behalf - I seem to remember possibly owing him a lunch or something anway. But I'm deciding that it has to be tomorrow otherwise I will go to Kikuya since it's totally close...

Call me tomorrow and we can figure out the logistics of it all...

Toro is delicious. I prefer Hamachi though. It's smooth consistent texture is perfect. And uhhh, since it's a fish, I expect a degree of fish taste. That's actually part of why I like it. More flavor. I can't imagine going out for raw fish, and not wanting a sea-ish flavor to it. :D

Oh, isn't most fish frozen on its trip accros the ocean? I know that certain types of fish that one eats at a sushi restaurant can't be fished around here. Would fish make the journey if it wasn't on ice? Interesting, I'd like to know more about that. I suppose you could get non-frozen salmon. MMMM salmon sashimi. Yummm!!! Anyway, I've never had a problem with the quality of fish at ILS, so if its frozen, I can't tell the difference. I buy big chunks of Hamachi and Maguro at Uwajimaya from the fish section which isn't frozen when I get it, but I have a feeling that it was frozen when it got there. It's nice to get a giant cut off of an even more giant slab of fish though. Some of those chunks are nearly as big as I am. Good stuff.

I had whale sushi for the first time last weekend.... Felt bad for a half a second, but it was deeee-licious!
