Hmm, I've never heard of them but I will check it out. Where did you discover them?
I guess we'll see.
What do you get when you cross 4 mediocre commercial rock bands?allmusic wrote:Crossfade combines the most marketable elements of Nickelback and P.O.D., throwing in the brooding aggression of Cold and Disturbed as bonus glue.

I picked up that DJ Kentaro Solid Steel mix the other day; good stuff for scratch afficianados or fans of Ninja Tune; he basically rips up tunes from the Ninja Tune catalog including tunes by Coldcut, DJ Food, Wagon Christ, Mr. Scruff, etc. Pretty amazing how cleanly he juggles d&b tunes while adding scratch phrases the whole time.
I'm curious to hear the new release by the Japanese beatbox champ AFRA (Always Fresh Rythm Attack). Mr. Sparks might recognize him from his appearance on alot of wide shows or from the Xerox commercials running here. He's got one release available out, but the new album Digital Breath was produced by Prefuse 73!
(Prefuse has alot of new stuff dropping soon too, including his "Piano Overlord" EP and a remix of a Mars Volta tune...)

I just nabbed a new Mars Volta track on suprnova yesterday... supposedly ripped out of a flash site which was demoing the track...
It is rockin in true MV fashion... can't wait to hear the whole album and get back into them again
G- That Prefuse73/AFRA album sounds hot... Gonna put the "feelers" out for that one.
I have Piano Overlord, but havent had a minute to give it a listen yet.

Rahzel set the bar pretty high for beatbox albums with his "Make the Music". Unless you have alot of good cameos, I think beatbox albums will only reach a very limited audience of heads.
But hearing some of Rahzel's live snippets on "Make the Music"...those are some big tonsils to follow.

danz: Just thought you might like to know that Medeski, Martin and Wood are providing background music for selling toilets in Japan.
damn goemon...how on earth did you stumble upon that link! I mean, I know you are the obscure-link mastah, but toilets and MMW?!?!? good lord...
that reminds me of this local kashiwa tv station I used to watch...they would have Grateful Dead as the bgm for the j-league soccer recaps...

Got a truckload of new stuff recently. Hope I can remember it all while I write this... anyway here goes:
Quantic - Mishaps Happening
Really cool afrobeat/nu-jazz/funk/latin-beat album on Ubiquity Records (a label with a roster of artists worth exploring). I've never really been "into" this kind of music, but this album just jumped out and grabbed me. It's just so well done, and has piqued my interest in all the genre's that comprise this album.
Diplo - Florida
I can't believe I've never heard of this guy before. Diplo is another record digging genious with tracks that are on par with RJD2 or Shadow at their best. I discovered a RJD2 vs. Diplo track I had laying around in my MP3 folder, but never listened to, and it is one of the coolest 17minute DJ vs DJ tracks i've ever heard. This album is a must-have.
M.I.A. - Galang (Single)
While this is only a single, it is worth mentioning because MIA's style is so nice. Sort of a dancehall / broken-beat mashup. The 26 year-old Sri-Lankan refugee come MC has been compared to Missy Elliot (athough I don't really hear it), and has been tearing up the UK scene. This track has a really fresh sound and is definitely worth looking for. Her full-length album is slated for sometime in the next few months. (for those interested, I found a short article about her: Link)
Diplo / M.I.A. - Piracy Funds Terrorism
This mashup album (I vow to not use the words mixup or mashup in the next review... I promise), is a huge variety of hip-hop and pop songs of recent past redone diplo-style with MIA handling the lyrics. There is also a long lineup of guest MC's on tracks through the allbum. Some of the beats fall a little flat on my ears, but the album overall is very cool. Definitely worth checking out.
Crown City Rockers - Earthtones
Really dope san-fran hip hop group that resembles a jazz-group or band is famous for their live performances. Their beats are smooth and jazzy but are never "soft." Some feature samples, but most are instrumental. The MC's are top-notch and the vocals are a perfect complement.
John Tejada - Logic Memory Center
IDM/Techno having really glitchy tech beats with warm soulful vocals. Some tracks are less accessible than others, but overall a really good and unique techno album.
There's a bit more, but I'll leave that for another post. Just on a quick sidenote, I think I may have posted both before, but I've been really loving TV on the radio - Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes, and The Killers - Hot Fuss lately... (although I agree with you Bos, there are a few skippers on Hot Fuss)

hey che...
if you really want to dig into the afro-beat genre, go straight to the source and stock up on Fela Kuti, and his son, Femi Kuti.
Femi is far more modern (collaborated with mos def, among others), whereas Fela is the original...both create an incredible and unique sound, all with jazz overtones...
