Doom 3 revisited.

Post by R3C »

I decided to finish my game of Doom 3 finally. (Stopped playing for a little while.) In all, I'd have to say it's right on par with HL2. It could use a gravity gun though. :D I have 2GB of RAM, clocked my CPU down to 3.0GHz (Things run better there, and I can turn the fan speed down a little bit for quiet operation.) I have my 6800GT clocked at Ultra speeds. Well, what's the point of all this you ask? I can run Doom 3 in 1280x1024 in Ultra quality (that's correct, Ultra) with 8x anisotropic filtering and never drop below sync. I makes more of a difference than one might think having all forms of maps uncompressed. Anyway, the game looks damed good now. I edited the shotgun and pistol slightly to do a bit more damage. I also increased the knock-back on the shotgun. Now it plays more like Doom 1 where if you run right up to something with the shotgun, it will splatter and knock them several feet back. Much more satisfying. The shotgun and plasma gun were always my favorites in the old Dooms, and it was disappointing that they were so weak in the new one. Now the play and display are all perfect, making the experience so much better. I like HL2 for its depth, but I've determined that Doom 3 isn't any less fun. It just needed some tuning.

This also leads me to believe that Quake IV is going to squash them both in just about every area. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

Oh, and there are things I had forgotten about in Doom 3, because the immediate wowing of HL2 clouded my mind. Purely graphical. I LOVE the lighting in HL2. (Especially the moonlight in RavenHolm and Nova Prospekt.) It's quite cool. It plays a big part in the immersion. However, going back through some of the mid-levels in Doom, I re-noticed things like the HUGE rotating machinery (generators, accelerators, and whatever.) Walking up to a GIGANTOR rotating chunk of metal with shadows flying all over the place, is truly an experience.

So, I suppose if they added some outdoor scenes to Doom 3, a gravity gun, and made the crew-logs more important to the actual game (like in System Shock games,) then it would be the perfect shooter. Similarly, if Half-Life 2 was made on the D3 engine, with the HL2 physics and semi-HDR lighting styles, then it would also be a perfect game.

I can't say I like one better than the other now.

Anyone up for another attempt at Doom 3 multiplay when everyone is back in front of their screens again? I guess 1.1 is supposed to fix some things.

That is all very good to hear. It leads me to believe that Quake 4 is going to be extra extra cool. Think how much more time they have had with the engine. Personally I have always been a bigger fan of Quake. You can't forget that Q1, Q2, and Q3 have all come out since Doom 2. This is their real key fanchise here and it will likely crush HL2 in coolness factor. But HL2 also has a coolness that is very non-id-ish (:D). I was really sucked in to the story in HL2 a way I wasn't in the first bit of Doom 3. However, I think I should give it a chance with the new hw and J3RK_mod_TM.

Yes, you guys will have to drop by and copy things, and I can show you some of the goodness. I can also email .cfg files and things like that. What's a good Admiral/3nder/Choki J3rK's house day?? We need one of those while you're both here.

Agreed - we should plan that for some day next week. Is there an afternoon or something that would work? Tuesday is probably the only day that is bad for me.

Any day will be fine afternoon style. I work pretty much alone next week, so I'll be able to take off as I see fit.
