Something cool! (and a request for McNevin)

So, I've been looking around for simple 2D freeware multiplayer space combat games. (Along the lines of Melee but large maps, and networked.) I've had some success. I've found one that looks like it supports many players, looks good, and has lots of weapon upgrades. It's kind of like that one from Interplay (I think Interplay) that people used to pay for. SubSpace was it? Anyway, this looks like a free version of that. I'm going to try it out when I get home tonight. If it's cool, then we should all start playing it. Actually, McNevin: See what you think of it. It's here:

If you aren't working today, grab a copy (it's only 14 megs,) and let me know what you think of it. Keep an eye out for any other games like this that support network play, with small spaceships from an overhead view. I've got a couple other ones linked, but so far this appears to be the best.

Subspace itself is now freeware. Can someone find out if you can download the server-side stuff, so we don't have to play with people that we don't want to? If we can get the whole package down, that would be excellent.

These games require no resources, and no bandwidth, so if we find one we like, I'll run a server all the time, that we can just jump in and out of whenever we want.

Looks interesting, how is it? Well, I think we should try to get our hands on the rest of SubSpace, so we can run our own server. (If we're going to play that,) otherwise, hopefully Andromeda 9 is really cool. We should try Beeeph's game as well. I think I saw a really early version of it with colorful spaceships, or something like that. (Unless that was someone else's game.) Anyway, I want to play some overhead space combat games with all of the Monkeys. Would be very fun, and very easy for everyone to participate, (since they require little resources and everyone can get them.)

Found some more games like this. I'll try them out when i get home. I'm trying to find one that uses OpenGL or something, so it's realtime 3D, but still overhead. Something with 16 players and huge maps would be nice.

Actually, I wouldn't suggest trying to play Genjox as my network code isn't all that tight and visual artifacts begin to surface when the player count exceeds eight persons. There's another online top-down 2D shooter like this called Arc, which is the game I stole ideas from to make Genjox. It's hosted on Won.net. I tried playing it awhile ago though, and wasn’t able to find it… I don’t know if it’s still around. They probably heard about genjox, then packed their shit up and left. I'm really liking this subspace game, we need to get a game going.

Stupid Andromeda 9. It looks like such a cool game, but I can't connect to the master server. I have the port forwarded and everything as well. Why did they have to use a master server anyway? Stupid. It has a dedicated server package that comes with it, but it still has to connect to the stupid master server. Stupid Junk Heads....
