Noticed something...
I also...
... agree with points 1-6. Freeform ridicule, goofiness, with a light smattering of information when needed. That's what the original lair was for. Acting stupid. Sigma Team posts, zwackery, SID tunes, and general poking of fun at anything and everything. Then came lair V2, which was still the same. Then the merge happened, things were slow, then wacky, then structured, then boring, then nearly non-existent, then slow, then silly, then crazy, then sillier, then wacky, and now it's as good as it can be. Wackiness, big avatars, lots of silly pictures, rampant jokes, drunken rants, people taking things the wrong way, people rectifying that with more ridicule. It's actually become quite fun. It could use a little more Beeeph, but it's quite healthy. I think more people should just join in the fun instead of ducking out. I know the overseas monkeys can be every bit as silly as us. I've seen it here and there. Open the Jesus McFucking floodgates already....

and if all else fails...
you can blame everything on me...it's all my fault really...when you think about it...
Nah...
... it all stems from boredom. We suffer from different types. Mine's occupational, yours is solitude related. They result in two different brands of silliness. Imagine though, if you will (or not, I don't care,) a forum that has seen more posts in a few days than the last three months. It must mean that something has changed to make it more fun and worth the posting. I think it's the completely off-the-wall humor going on. I mean really, I'd rather not give myself carpal tunnel problems, but I've been enjoying this lately. If it wasn't like this, I'd probably be posting on my pro-audio boards instead. This place would then rot under a layer of political humous...

I'm sure...
it's all just a phase we are going through...we can get back to the boring lack of activity later...

Yes this certainly is a uncharacteristic spike in activity from the original Monkey sect. I figure it will die down in time and then I won't have to really do any "administrating" to keep an even keel. I realize some people would see that as "policing" or stifling the boards free flow, but I have a responisibility to keep both monkeys and non-monkeys alike posting happily, and also to keep the board going well. For me, the success of the forum and thus my happiness is measured by the number of different users that are regularly posting. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy pure unadulterated monkeying as much as the next guy, but I also understand what it is like to be on a forum where you don't understand any of the jokes. Therefore I am leaning toward creating an all out monkey play pen and more topical section. Kevin was right to say that the original purpose of mixing the monkeys.jp and monkeys.us has been fulfilled. We'll see though...
Just curious....
....am I a monkey? Or a non-monkey? I certainly wouldn't want to be associated with the Sigma team, but I also don't engage in much tomfoolery either. I must be suffering from a lack of self-awareness....does a parent of a monkey gain honorary monkey status through birth-rights, or is there an initiation involved (like a minimum of non-sensical posts that relate to drunkenness, behaving outrageously at rock concerts, or the like)?
There are...
... not stringent requirements for being a monkey. I think a degree of silliness is in order, but not much more. The original term "SpiderMonkey's Lair" was coined by our very own Admiral McNevin. I was generating fractal images (probably about 10 years ago) One of them kinda looked like a spider's web. McNevin yelled "SpiderMonkey'sLair" seemingly out of nowhere. That's been a favorite phrase of ours since then. Then McNevin created an email forum for us called the Monkey Lair. All manner of silliness went on in there. Then 3nder formed the new lair when that one no longer existed. Since then the silliness was lowering, and a lot less pure silly fun was occurring. (Partially, but not completely because of the forum merge.) Some of us protested this merge, but it happened anyway, and we were assured that the silliness was still welcome. Well, now that we're being more silly than everyone else, and the other people suddenly won't post anything, it's been made our fault. They are still welcome to post anything they want. Nobody is stopping them. We just happen to be posting a lot, because it's fun again all of a sudden. I for one will cease posting the minute any such "policing" occurs. For a while the board was mostly serious, nobody policed that. It's not our fault nobody has posted a serious topic. Nobody has to read our posts either if they don't want to. If they don't see an interesting topic, authored by someone they can count on not to be silly, then they shouldn't click.
Now that I've given a brief history and my thoughts on the situation, I'd like to welcome you as a monkey. Anyone who would come over and play a game of Croquet with us at the old Redmond house, is more than welcome as a monkey. There are no blood-alcohol requirements, or anything of the sort.
And never trust Sigma Team.

good recap
It seems like there have always been a lot of inside jokes which make it hard for people that didn't know any history of us to understand what any of the jokes meant but that is where a lot of the fun was derived from anyway.
I think the getting back to the roots of the monkey lair, like putting it back into its own group as before, would be a great start but what would be really cool is to take advantage of the domain name that Kevin already has...
www.monkeylair.com
I think that it would be way cooler to have a full on website like before than just a topic in a forum so that we could grow it however we want.
Will you do it Kevin for us all again Kevin? Please? Please man? Please?

teh wiki...
was ok...but it was also kind of limited...might have to look at other packages...
For what it's worth
...my recent lack of posting has very little to do with any zanery, wackitude, inside-jokifying and/or tomfoolerishessness. I've been busy offline moving to the ghetto and waiting for Teh InterNetMan to come set up Teh IntarWeb so that I can "e-converse" in "chat rooms" with fellow "netizens" using "emoticons" and such and so on.

Policing is such a harsh term. I don't understand why you protest any form of administration. I don't want you to take it personally and talk about not posting anymore. I just think if breaking up the board would make it easier for more people to post then it might be a good idea. I haven't decided that for sure though. It's not like I don't want silliness it is just that it gets difficult for people that would like to read all the posts to go through 30 posts of randomness when the titles are all over the place and the volume is as high as it has been lately. In cases such as that it makes sense to me that it would be easier to have a completely crazy section where no "policing" would be done at all and a more topical area. It would not be a monkey zone and non-monkey zone at all. The last thing I want to do is alienate anybody J3RK and I would really hate it if even discussing this made you feel like you didn't want to post here anymore.

So, you want to move the monkeys to a special monkeys only section. A ghetto for monkeys. You forum fascist.
But really, even if the forum were divided into 9 sections, I would probably check them all because where else am I going to kill time that would be better used for working?
I suppose that if I were the average non-former monkeylair poster checking the forum after 3 days of not checking it, I might be a bit overwhelmed by the 5000 new posts that are in some kind of secret "monkey code."
Just make sure you're not being followed by Albanian cabs.

New place is not as ghetto as I imply it to be, but it is a goddawful mess right now with wires spewing all over the place like a half-damaged terminator from the future. Please note that when I say "ghetto", I am only saying that comparitively to our old place; we continue to enjoy unbridled luck and spacious accomodations which are spoiling us beyond cure. The gods must be pleased by my daily ritual of virgin squirrel sacrifice and are rewarding me with plush carpet and proximity to good ramen shops.
Any time you are in Tokyo, you are more than welcome to sleep in one of the various hammocks I am setting up in the guest area. If said hammocks prove to be unwieldly, you are welcome to abscond to our old terrace. I may do that a few times myself, just for old time's sake (sniff!).
(By the way, Mrs. Goemon says "hi" and hopes you are doing well.)

I'm not really...
... just making a point. If you want to move us into the forum projects then that's fine. I don't really care all that much, but I kinda saw this coming when the merge happened. Anyway, it would be really cool to have another section, but we need to integrate some of the new features that we've been discussing. I don't know how we would go about doing it, but we need a shared sketchpad. (We also need SID tunes, but that can wait.) I looked into java applets that let you draw, but most of them are for chat and have 6 million other functions besides the drawing. I just want the pad... I'd still check a serious section, but I would probably contribute less to that one.
You want you...
... some? Then come get you some!
