Isla Vista Riots part 2
Roadblocks were set up at the entrances to IV and only residents were allowed to travel in and out. The National Guard and the LAPD arrived. A certain Sargeant Honey became infamous for wearing Medieval torture devices on his belt. A six PM curfew was enforced and we were constantly reminded of it by helicopter loudspeakers that also repeated that three people together were considered a crowd. Soldiers with bayonets on their rifles travelled up and down the streets in dumptrucks. After a couple of nights, the trucks came equipped with snowplows to push aside bonfires and burning dumpsters as well as boards with nails. During the day, life was peaceful; at night it was war. We were inundated with tear gas and pepper gas. Rock-throwing became a sport. A cop car would speed down a block, stop, the driver would yell profanities at the hidden students, and the car would be pelted with rocks as it sped away. A few minutes later the scene would be re-enacted and it continued for hours. Cop cars back then were black & white and one was torched on the Loop. (to be continued)
