DOOM3 Tek Discussion --NO SPOILERS PLEASE--

Okay... Way too many doom 3 threads on here, but I wanted a place where I can discuss tweaking, without seeing a bunch of spoilers.

Was wondering if anyone had seen this: set r_displayRefresh "75"

Anyone have any luck on an ATI card, using that cache setting?

Cache settings should be similar to this:

seta image_useCache "1"
seta image_cacheMegs "128"
seta image_cacheMinK "8192"

This will keep Doom from dynamically sizing the cache, and keep things moving a wee be smoother, especially on slower systems. You can boost the 128 up to 256, but I'd say keep it 128-192.

That other optimization I posted IS only for new NV cards, so don't bother with it.

You can also change some of those "Downsize" settings, but I don't have the list of which do what in front of me.

You don't want to set the refresh rate to anything but 60, or you will probably get some funny bizniss even with V-Sync. Everything else about the game is 60Hz, and since when things are moving, you can't see the refresh, 60Hz is more than adequate.

Thanks... I looked all over the forum, and couldnt find your earlier post. Well looks like that wasnt what i was looking for anyway.

Do a serch on "Doom" and laugh as you see how many threads it is mentioned in.

I've gotten it to the point where it runs in 1280x1024 High detail 4x aniso, and it doesn't even drop below 60 in extra large fights!!! I now have it running "Limmo Fresh!!" It is now pure unadulterated silk!!! I'm pretty sure I can find silk settings for any pc now. WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!

Jerk's tried the silky....

Bravo... Good to hear. I too am running quite nice, the only problem that I'm having is those 3 seccond "pauses", wich i expect the cache increase to correct.

Some people have stated that turning off fast writes in the driver helps smoothness, but I don't think I want to try it. May help though?

NOOOO! I've been down that road before, and I like my fast writes.

Worst case scenario, i can drop to medium, but I wont dissable fast writes.

Dont get me wrong, the game is running smoothly in 1024 HQ, now that i dropped the aniso. Its just sometimes when it loads a texture it has never used before. There is a breif 1-3 second pause.

That cache setting, hopefully should clear that pause up, all nice like.

Doom still is not fast enough... im contemplating reducing my screen to 800x600. Gasp, say it isnt so! I even turned down Anisotropic to 1X

The magic cache doesnt do much for me. If only it cached what was going to be in the level, not what ive already seen in the level. Every time it has to load a new texture, i get a tiny, few second pause.

My roomate has a P4-2.8, 512MB, and a 9700 and has the same problem. Cept he is in 800x600.

I get 35 FPS in the Timedemo, and 45 if i run it a seccond time (because of the cache)

Any new tweaks today?

P.S. Forcing Triple Buffer yeilded a 3 fps increase.

The cache IS a pre-cache. Play in a higher resolution and on Medium then. All medium does is compress more texture data. It doesn't remove detail settings or anything like that.

Depending on your system, we have found 128MB video cards that can handle High Quality mode very easily.
Nooooooooooo! dont want to compress textures, and lose sound depth.

Try turning off your fast writes. Just see what happens, and then turn them back on.

ok... i guess it cant hurt to try.

How high have you put your caches? How high was the minimum? I set minimum to 8192. How high is your AGP aperature? Have you defragged your HDD? You should uninstall (saving your games,) defrag, then reinstall. There is also one more thing that will aid in quick loads of new areas. Decompress all the PK4 files to folders. This for some reason invalidates network play, so I have decompressed folders AND the pk4s. It has to decompress the textures out of those files, so that may be part of it as well. It may not be a problem of texture transfers, but texure loads? I've seen people using all of these tricks...

Oh, you should definitely lock your framerate to 60 using the console command or CFG entry. I found that it ran much smoother than when it was auto, 75, 85, etc.

Where are you getting this stuff, ive been reading hardocp forums all day.

I have tried cachemegs 128, 192. (I was afraid to use 256, but will try it later)

I have tried cachemink 5128, 10240, 20480

I was actually thinking about changing my agp apreture size last night, and was reading a site that had some formulas on apreture size. I never got around to changing it though. I defragment my pc weekly, so i doubt that would do much.

You actually unpacked your pak files? Wow... hardcore.

I've been getting this stuff all over the place. I'll start in one forum, follow a link, then another, then another, etc. I extract anything that looks interesting, read a couple comments about what it did, then move on.

I still haven't seen mine drop below sync yet, since all the tricks. We'll get yours running the way you want it.

Turn your aperature to 256. Don't worry about the formulas...

What is the console command for fps locking.

I've been reading HardOCP and planetdoom.

When i set the cache to 192 it takes 5 minutes for my pc to release that chunk of memory i used, makes things nice and slow, but it eventually recovers.

seta r_displayRefresh "60"

Use that, and then set V-Sync on.

It's the one you gave me. :D
