Behold.
Candiria's new album is almost out, and (I've procured an early copy). I will be purchasing the album the day it comes out, as I have purchased all of the Candiria albums before it. Candiria as a band means a lot to me, Ken Schalk is one of my favorite drummers, ever. So that is why I am making such a big deal over this. This album is SO very different from their previous albums, and it's SO GOOD.
Candiria has always been unpredictable, in the fact that they fuse many different types of music into their distinct sound. Started as a deathmetal band they envelope Hardcore, Metal, Jazz, Rap, Reggae, Funk, Fusion, though Carley's vocals have always remained in the vein of hardcore and rap. Musically, they do it all. And when I say they do it all, they do it WELL. They don't just have a little "jazzy" part in one song on one album, and its not "kind of Jazzy". It's fucking Miles Davis jazzy. But the next second they can turn it around into the most neck-breaking metal groove riff you've ever heard! And then break off into a fusion improv and blow your mind, but somehow they make it all feel so right.
This album, which is the most well produced album I've heard from Candiria (in my opinion), is a testament to the process of their development...
Candiria was on tour for their 2001 release "300 Percent Density" and the follow-up re-release of some older songs called "The COMA Imprint" when they were involved in a massive road accident. They were in their touring van towing all the equipment behind them in a trailer when a tractor trailer slammed into them from behind splitting their trailer and van completely in HALF! All their equipment was destroyed, all of the members were seriously injured and hospitalized. Some of them didn't know if they would even be able to play, let alone tour again.
After 2 years of physical therapy and recoup, they are preparing for the release of the album "What Doesn't Kill You". 10 songs which they have poured their hearts into and have been ridiculed by long time fans as well as praised for. The album features the band diving into a land they have stayed away from throughout their existence. Music for the masses. The album features Carley actually singing! As well as both guitar players and the bass player doing harmonies. This is a huge step for them as they have always been big underground, never having broken through to the mainstream. Don't get me wrong. This album IS CANDIRIA. It still has that untouchable technical prowess, but it also has radio friendly hits! I hope this really hits the big one for them. They deserve it, big time.
I love it. But then again, I'm a die-hard Candiria fan so you would have to take my word with a grain of salt. After hearing their less radio friendly albums "Surrealistic Madness", "The Process of Self Development", "Beyond a Reasonable Doubt" and the album that changed my whole outlook on music and approaching drums (next to Tool's Aenima) in 2001 "300% Density", I knew that no matter what these guys did, I would always listen to it. And I'm damn glad to say, it won't be a bit difficult holding up to that.
I HAVE THE NEW CANDIRIA ALBUM. FUCK YES.

I also attest to the greatness of Candiria. I have obtained their past albums...by finding them abandoned and in need of a home.
Did I ever mention that I got my settlement check from the 2 billion class action lawsuit against the record industry for defrauding consumers throughout the 1990s?
Yeah, they were found guilty guilty guilty.
Our government cut a sweet deal and each person who signed up for the lawsuit got about 13 dollars. That is true justice.... wait a second, that won't even cover one of the hundreds of CDs I was overcharged for!
