Wiihoo! Things are shaping up rather nicely for what should be one of the coolest video game systems evar!
Check out these
new Zelda movies. Watch the gameplay at the end of the 2nd video and just try to not get super excited for this game. It looks AWESOME!
The Virtual Console feature is Nintendo's answer to Xbox Live Arcade. While this feature isn't too exciting to people knowledgeable in the emu scene, the
2006 Virtual Console game lineup is an interesting mix of Nintendo classics and hits from other systems (Mario 64 alongside Sonic and Bonk).
Other than Zelda I can't say I am all too excited about the other lanuch titles. I am glad it comes with the Wii Sports for some free fun. Super Monkey Ball could be fun but I have never played those games. Excite Truck has the first party goodnes going for it. The suprise hit of the launch could be the Pikmin-esque
Elebits.
Maybe it is better that the launch titles are slim... given that Zelda is rumored to take 70 hours (!!) to complete. Jeebus - that is a big time commitment. Well I am antsy.
IGN probably has the
best launch guide - tho it is a bit slow to make it online.
Anyone planning to buy one?

I am so damn freaking excited for that damn game I may do something stupid next friday (which happens to be payday) and just buy one (if they are available). My only problem is that my damn TV cannot do it justice. I wish I had a roomate that would go splurge on a decent tv.

It only does 480p and standard TV res, so you should be ok. What kind of monitor are you using? My LCDs have S-Video in. One of them has component as well. If you don't have one, I highly recommend checking out the Samsungs. (component in, inexpensive, HDCP, etc.)

I would take 480p over this shitty gaussed up and color-skewed set we have in my house. It makes everything look bad. Oh I so much want a new TV... anyone know where I can get
one of these off the back of a truck?
My monitor is still the ol Sony 21" big boy. I haven't upgraded to an LCD because any LCD I buy will be less resolution, and therefore a downgrade. So I continure to lug around big boy. There is no VGA output on the Wii - and I want to play on the couch anyway.
By the by - the Wii Online network section has been added to the
IGN Wii Launch Guide. Built in 802.11b/g is very cool. Between Zelda, Wii Sports and Mario 64 I will be more than busy until the next batch of games rolls out!

I want one a lot, but I promised myself I wouldn't buy one until January if I got the 8800, and I got it today. So, I'll be Wiiing all over everything in January. Unless I get one for Christmas or something like that.

Do you have BNC inputs on Big Boy? If so, you can use component output from the Wii.

Lower resolution on an LCD is still an upgrade if you ask me. I would happily give up a few lines for no eye-hurting, short depth, etc.

Damn Damn Damn!! I was going to take Friday off and buy it - but it doesn't come out until Sunday! Damn!

I'm thinking about getting one again.
Hard to resist it really. My PC just makes the PS3 and 360 cease to exist. The Wii is so far in a different direction that I just must have one. Quite the complimentary game device.

Just grabbed one off ebay. Only a few more dollars than it would have been with tax if I bought it here. There are so many for sale on there right now, that I don't think people can inflate them as high as is usual for a new console. Hopefully it will show up quickly.

Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have secured my Wii hot dammit!!
I ventured out at 7:30am yesterday to the local Target with the highest allocation of Wiis (153). Turns out demand was higher than I had anticipated and I was number 167 in line. Had I been 15 minutes earlier I would have snagged one there.
So instead I had to head to a nearby Circuit City which I knew didn't open until 10. Had I waited in line in the nice shady line there I would have probably gotten one but instead I went and stood in line across the parking lot at Toys'R'Us because of rumored earlier opening time. They did open a few minutes early but I had to wait in the 85 degree sun (why is it so freaking hot in November??). But at 9:45 I emerged with my Wii and Zelda! Well worth the heat.
It was a breeze to set up and get online. I created my Mii and got all the system updates and popped in Zelda right away (haven't even tried Sports yet or downloaded Mario64).
Zelda is so great. The first impression is an upgraded version of Ocarina of Time. It is all Ocarina and none of Wind Waker. I actually liked Wind Waker better - but they are certainly different kinds of games. As far as initial impressions go, Twilight Princess keeps all of the best aspects of Ocarina (gameplay, design, overall world atmosphere) and improves on all the weak spots. Instead of goofy Great Deku Trees you get scary shadow monsters and very cool animal spirits. Characters feels very influenced by Miyazaki - which is of course a big plus.
I totally love the control. It couldn't be more natural to swing the sword with the remote and aiming isn't too tough either. It is very comfortable to play with your hands separated. The only complaint I have is that only having the one analog stick doesn't allow you to circle strafe or look around when you are moving. If only you could hold a button on the remote and use it's motion sensor to look around while using the analog stick on the nunchuck to run. Maybe later games will allow this.
All in all I am very impressed and excited and I can't wait to get off work and rush home and play more!

Game Trailers has just put together a very impressive 6 part retrospective of the entire Zelda series. The first 5 in the series chronicle each of the games in the order they were released.
The Last Part (which any Zelda fan must watch) puts forth a very compelling argument for the structuring of the games in a timeline. It is surprisingly complicated and let's just say I can't wait to beat Twilight Princess to see if their hypothesis is correct.
Anyone ever play Majora's Mask?

I started to play it, but didn't really get anywhere. I heard there was a fairly strict time limit, which usually puts me off for this sort of game. I like to take my time, explore all nooks and crannies, etc. Collect all the damn skulltulas, (that sort of thing.)

I have my Wii!!! And even though I only have Wii Sports, Mario64, and Mario Brothers for it, I LOVE IT. Once again Nintendo has pulled off something that could have been gimmicky, and defined a new way to play. Wii Sports Golf is so fun. I can't wait until they make a proper Mario Golf for it. I'd also like to see a new Pilot Wings game. It's been too long since 64. I wish I could find a copy of Twilight Princess, but they seem to be sold out everywhere. I can understand them being sold out of the system, but there is no excuse these days for software sellouts. PC game manufacturers have no problem putting a couple million copies out on launch day for games, so I don't understand having a shortage of Zelda. What, they couldn't just ask for a million more copies from the duplicator? Bleh. At least there aren't any for sale on online stores. I'll have to take a peek around locally. Anyway, nice system. I'm not disappointed with the graphics either. This is the perfect complimentary system to my PC which has better graphics than any console in existence. I want flash, I play on the PC, I want goofy fun, Wii. Wiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!
Now I just need some games for it.
I spent a couple of hours making Miis for it last night. That alone was quite fun.

I agree about the Mario Golf. McNevin and I got a good chance to play around with Sports with a bunch of people. It is really a blast and makes unbelievable use of the control devices. I can't wait until some games come out that focus on just one of those elements and put in the kind of development that justifies a $50 price tag. It will be hard to beat 5 games for free. I am particularly looking forward to a good baseball sim.

I'm knee deep in twilight now. VERY COOL GAME! I'm [spoilbox]up in the tower where Zelda is now... in dog mode... also, now with weiner scent...[/spoilbox]
The bobber fishing controls are a little touchy, but other than that, it's tops so far.
I couldn't find a copy anywhere. Then I just happened to be at Target for a minute, and thought I'd see if they had any extra controllers. They didn't have controllers, but had about 30 copies of Twilight Princess. No other store in the area had any.

My playtime is at 35 hours...
Glad you found it. It is a fantastic gaming experience. If we decide to start discussing it more we will have to, a.) turn this back into the Zelda thread, b.) start a new Zelda thread, or c.) find a different thread that is about something else and commandeer it as a Zelda thread.

Not sure what I'm at, but probably around 8-10 now. Just [spoilbox]Got my real Hero's clothes, and got my first power. (the plunge thingy)[/spoilbox]
SSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FUN!!!
I named my hero Quozmil, and my horse is Horsy.
I thought it should start with a Q, (because I like the letter Q,) the rest followed quickly with some random synaptic firing.

You may not care because of your TV, but if you want a component cable, Nintendo is selling them directly before they're available in stores. (better than paying $60+ for the "premium" cables that some people are selling now)

I have 21" widescreen LCD (16x10) mounted from the ceiling over my bed. In my living room though, I just have a 27" flat CRT with component ins. I'm not sure if it supports EDTV, or just 480i, but it isn't too bad. LCDs are getting so inexpensive though. I can get a 40" widescreen right now for $900.
Anyway, the Wii is hooked up in the living room right now, but component cables should help a bit.
Back to my room: So, the widescreen is mounted over the bed, with the cables running through the ceiling down to the wall. We have built-in dresser drawers, which I'm in the process of gutting. I'm putting my main PC in the wall, as well as my modular synthesizer. I'll just have USB, Audio, and DVI connections on wall-plates, with my PC
s flat panel mounted on a wall-mount. I haven't decided whether to put a small table for the KB and mouse there, or make a fold-up desk sort of thing that comes out of the wall. I'm building framed cloth panels to cover the synth and PC opening, so air can pass through. I may also exhaust the PC's heat into the attic-space outside our room. I got a DVI/HDMI switchbox, so the PC and the Cable/DVR box can both be attached to the panel over the bed. That way I can play game and media on it from the PC, or watch TV. Then the PC can also be used on its own panel, or on both.
I'm also planning to recess/flush-mount my studio monitors in the ceiling which slopes down to meet the walls where the PC monitor is. I've bought all the parts, plates, cables, etc. I just need to do the wood-working portion (which should happen right after the holidays.
