Feds target warez in "Operation Fastlink"

According to IGN Insider, the US Deptartment of Justice engaged in a wide scale sting called "Operation Fastlink". The operation spanned 27 states and 10 countries targeting computers used for storage and distribution of music, movies, and thousands more copyrighted materials. The sting specifically targeted "warez" groups which distribute illegal games, movies and software to select clients. 200 computers were seized during the operation.

* INDIVIDUALS FROM Belfast, Manchester and Sheffield were arrested on suspicion of piracy. The BSA alleged they belong to a group called Fairlight, and reported that offensive weapons, counterfeit driving licence, copiers, computers and credit cards were seized as part of the investigation.

Among the groups targeted by Operation Fastlink are well-known organizations such as Fairlight, Kalisto, Echelon, Class and Project X, all of which specialized in pirating computer games, and music release groups such as APC. The enforcement action announced today is expected to dismantle many of these international warez syndicates and significantly impact the illicit operations of others.

I wonder if this will confuse the general public to the point that if you are part of any kind of a computer group, such as one that writes demos, then you are bad?

I don't know that much about computers other than.. other than the one we got at my house. My mom put a couple games on it and I play them.

J3RK - that last post is bordering on political. a-hem ... The government is most concerned about financial matters, be them war, the state of the economy, or even copyright violations. The warez scene has apparently become a big enough profit detractor and the feds are riding the wave created by the FIAA and MPAA (who if they aren't feds themselves are real buddy buddy with the boys in black). Blame Fraunhoffer and blame Shawn Fanning and blame bandwidth. If music and movie downloads had never made there way to the mainstream we would still be enjoying our pir8ed games in relative peace, enjoying the inter-group slanders and accusations in the nfos instead of reading about pleas to "Free CoolPHat!"

You gotta think though, I am sure the feds know about places like nfonews. That must make their work so much easier.

"Researchers of the Swedish University Network (SUNET) have beaten the Internet2 Land Speed Record using two Dell 2650 machines with single 2GHz CPUs running NetBSD 2.0 Beta. SUNET has transferred around 840 GigaBytes of data in less than 30 minutes, using a single IPv4 TCP stream, between a host at the Luleå University of Technology and a host connected to a Sprint PoP in San Jose, CA, USA. The achieved speed was 69.073 Petabit-meters/second. According to the research team, NetBSD was chosen 'due to the scalability of the TCP code.'"

By my calculations that equals:

477.866 MB/sec
3.733 Gb/sec

AKA fast enough.

... They should all have cheap slip accounts outside the school's domain, range, so it looks like someone's hacking in and using their accounts to do naughty things. They could dial out through a normal phone line, and then do huge transfers, offload the data to external storage devices. Or something like that anyway. They're students, they should have all kinds of trickery...
