Thank you "YBBUser" for you apparently quite far away wireless access point without security. It has taken me 45 minutes (we are talkin slooooooooooooow folks) but I was able to download my email and post this shout.

I feel like Christian Slater.

So I got a phone call a few days ago from the property manager that said they were putting internet into the house. The said it would be into each room and it was supposed to be hooked up when I returned from Kobe.

Well I got back and found no new outlets in my room and no cables strung haphazardly under doors or through windows. Upon further investigation I found a cable modem hidden under the TV in the common area downstairs with incoming cable but no outgoing network of any kind. No problem here, I slapped down my linky and wirless linky and now I have full broadband access to teh intarweb. I just hope no one comes along and decides the two network devices would make nice additions to their personal collection of goods stolen form gaijin houses.
