Another video games thread - NEW XBOX TITLES
I have a new Xbox. It is a Japanese 1.0 Special Edition with a slighly transparent "skeleton" case and a few other visual enhancements. Complete with Xecuter 2.2 Pro and 120GB HDD, this is one mean machine. So needless to say I have been playing a ton of games waiting for the snow to fall.
Anyone notice how many great new games are out right now?
Top Spin Can we talk about tennis for a second? I actually have found myself interested in Tennis for the last few months. I gave it a try one day over the summer with some Japanese friends and found it extremely difficult. How the hell do you make the ball go where you want? Jonathan and I also found ourselves watching a Thai dubbed French tennis match in a Lopburi hotel. And now Top Spin. This game is incredible! I admit, I was skeptical of just how good a tennis game could be. Boy was I wrong. It is fun to play the computer, but I have found the easy level a little too easy and the medium level a bit difficult (as of right now)...but the real fun is in the 2 player mode. Jaime and I threw down for a few hours the other night and it was some of the most video game fun I have had in a long time. The gameplay is just so well done. This game is a real ace!
...sorry
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Take the best elements of the original Tomb Raider and bring them into the graphical world of the 21st century (and beyond - damn this game looks good), then turn the guns into sword and you have PoP:SoT. On top of that integrate an interesting storyline with great cinematics. It is super fun running along walls and swinging around horizontal lamp posts like a gymnist. They really did a great job of capturing the PoP feel. Best 3rd person game I have played since Azurik.
Project Gotham 2 Time for some more kudos for the PG team at Bizarre. They took an amzing driving game and made it even better. In fact, they left everything that was so well done alone and fixed everything that could have needed it. The Kudos system is better - you pick a medal level (silver, gold, etc) instead of actually adjusting the kudos (one by one) before the race. The AI also drives better. On top of that, the cars are amazing! They have added a whole lot more, and you can walk all around them in the showroom, taking any one (save the 6 extra-super cars) for a spin on the test drive track. These cars actually feel different. The driving is so well done (as it was in PG) I feel like I actually know the difference between driving a 996 Carrera Coupe and a 996 Turbo. Check out the (badly ordered) car list here (just look how many Porsches there are). Best of all, you just buy the car you want to drive now instead of beaitng some random challenge and opening up some un-picked car - yeah a Camaro! You go through about 10 challenges in each class, and you can only race the cars in the class. Then you move to the next class and buy a new car with your winnings. This game is so well done I have no problem saying it is the best driving game ever!
Amped 2 The world of Amped snowboarding just got better. Again, the developers found a way to improve on the original without changing the already near perfect gameplay. I haven't gotten too far into this one, but it is easy to see it is another winner.
SSX 3 The world of SSX snowboarding just got better. I also haven't gotten too far into this one, but the snowboarding is much unchanged. The music and sound is better and the graphics are absolutely beautiful. It looks like they have tried to make this more carreer - build a character - oriented a la Amped. It looks to me that Amped 2 does a better job of this. SSX was always for the quick Arcade mode and Amped the realistic sim. But either way the game is good.
Tony Hawk Underground I was thinking...I don't think I have put more hours into any franchise of video games than I have the THPS series. Amazing the amount of time I have spent with these games. The skating is pretty much the same, but this game took on a whole new approach to story...it has a story. From what I can, tell you work your way up from just a kid on the street to a pro, challenging street thugs and pro skaters along the way. You actually have to get off your board or into a car for some of the challenges (how about we just skate?) I am on the fifth chapter and so far I have just grind-manual-grind-grind-manual-grind-big air-manual-grind -ed my way through it with little challenge. Same great skating, I just hope it gets a bit more challenging.
Also, the world of Xbox emulation has taken a giant leap forward. There are now near perfect emulators for NES, Genesis, SNES, PCE, MAME, C64, and GB/GBA that support state saving. I beat Zelda in 3 days.
Games I have yet to check out: Legacy of Kain: Defiance, Need For Speed Underground, True Crime: Streets of LA.
Good thing I have a lot of free time right now.

While I havent spent more than a minute or two playing amped 2, the control/gameplay didnt seem drastically different/better than the 1st amped which was a good game, but not the most fun Ive had with a snowboarding game. That being said, SSX 3 is hands down the best snowboarding game ive played on any system. The level design, responsive control, and huge air will blow your mind. Ive heard the argument "but amped is more realistic..." ...blegh... realistic shmealistic... fun factor is the way to rate, and SSX 3 definitely wins in that category....
Need for Speed: Underground
This game was made to be the 2Fast2Furious game... Everything about the game (sounds/style/visual effects) are ripped straight from the movie. Not that that's a bad thing... The driving in this game, while nowhere near as technical as Project Gotham 2, is awesome.... It has a style reward system similar to PG2's kudos, but thats the only similarity it shares. It's super fast, the AI can be really aggressive, and the bystander street-traffic is a challenging element to deal with. The career mode is pretty deep, as is the car customization (which is a huge part of the game). The visual customizations alone are endless... everything from body kits, to vinyl stickers, to headlamps. There are a few different race modes as well. You have your standard 4 or 5 car race, then there's a drift-competition, a street drag-race (which is soooo well done), and a time attack... The only one, but major flaw this game has is the omission of any replays!!! How they can make a game which is so cinematic, and not include replays is beyond me! In any event, As much as I love technical racers like PG2, I dont put this game in the same category, and I like it for totally different reasons.... Highly recommended.

Figured Id dig this thread up for a little smacking around...
just picked up Full Spectrum Warrior yesterday, and it is easily one of the best games on the BOX. It's a totally new type of game... a mixture of realtime-strategy and squad-based fps. Amazing production quality with good storyline, and characters that have alot of personality (shocking that theres so much personality in a military-themed game). anyway... grab it if you see it. It's a buttload of fun.

I like SSX3 better than Amped2. Im usually the advocate of the "realistic" snowboard game, but this time i just have more fun with the arcade style game.
Need for speed underground is real good, and far better than midnight club 2.
I'm downloading full spectrum warrior right now; ive been pretty exited about it since i saw it at e3.

haven't tried it yet, but shiat thats awesome....HA2P1PY9TUR5TLE. By using this quickly revealed code (it was uncovered one full day after the game appeared in retail stores) in the menu screen of Full Spectrum Warrior you can uncover the built-in US Army Version of Pandemic's killer new tactical military simulator. Yep, it's hidden in there, a six-mission simulator, complete with different objectives, a different HUD, different controls, and more.

That's pretty cool about the army simulation, ill have to check that out.
Have you gotten Riddick, the graphics are pretty good in that, almost doom3 'ish.
No codes for BF:Nam yet. Wouldn't we need a clonecd image as well?

Ahhhh excellent! thanks dude. I'm all patched up and ripping. That epcgaming site is key. Private servers are the shit. I got on some of the Call of Duty servers and they were really good. for some reason, all the low-ping servers on BFV are empty... either way, we should all get in on some intercontinental CoD or BFV multiplay action.

That EPC site looks like the sheeeit. But what is up with ASE? Is it just gamespy? Can you not access the EPC servers from the in-game console?
McN - I need to gets me ahold of BFV. Also FSW, Farcry, and UT04 if you got em. What are you up to this w/e? I'm still working on living situation. It looks like I have found a pretty sweet place but it isn't available until Sept 1, meaning I have to find a temp spot for July and Aug.
Goin back to the tittie of this thread, what else have you guys been playin on the box. What has come out in the last 2 months worth having?

I just got Spiderman 2 last night and it is fukkin awesome.
They basically built a full on model of manhattan with all the major features and pretty much every landmark, and distinct building in NY. You bascially have the entire city to explore. The web swinging is soooo good that
it's one of those games that's fun just moving around. I spent most of the time playing last night just swinging around and pulling off tricks. Doing swan dives off the tip of the empire state building finished up with a full speed swing is awesome. The production quality is top notch with a full movie score, and voiceovers from the movies actors. The daytime city looks good, but some of the buildings are a little too mirror-ish. The nighttime city is one of the best nighttime cities i've seen in a videogame...
I wasn't blown away by the 1st spiderman game, but this one kicks booty.
If you have an xbox you need this game.

Also... in other bizzox news...
I installed the new version of Avalaunch, and it is head and shoulders better than the last version. It knocks EvoX out of the box (literally and figuratively). I think the best part is the net support. It's got all kinds of connectivity features (in addition to the standard built in FTP server):
- Built in IRC client (im guessing this is for xbins)
- Built in filemanager / FTP client (so u can ftp from your BOX)
- AutoUpdate/Version-check for the dash
- AutoUpdate for Xbox Media Center
- Online Skin browser
- Plays shoutcast audio streams (such a nice touch)
- Displays News Feeds (default xbox-scene news)
- Special high-speed connectivity with a good looking ISO transfer prog called Qwix
and other good stuff:
- Alernative boot (depending on the button you hold down while boot ing, you can launch another app or dash. So I've got my right trigger set to EvoX in case I want to go back to that)
- 3D game icons (which is much faster now... no wait when loading up a list)
- 3D screensaver (a nice touch)
if you guys have been using EvoX... u should definitely give the new avalaunch a shot.

Nyce. My favorite part of the first Piderman thwe Movie the Game game was always just swingin around. I'm looking forward to this one.
Funny that you mentioned Avalaunch. I was just about to log onto xbins and grab all the new apps that have come out in the last few months since I finally have my box(es) hooked up after a long while. One of the dudes that lives in this house has a modded box as well and we are getting our data transfer on as we speak.

fo sho.
Now that i'm having a fully networked xbox renaissance, I checked out Xbox connect last night. It works perfectly and is pretty cool if you hop on there with a bunch of friends. Played a quick game of Halo to test it out, and was reminded of how lame FPS are with a controller, but it worked perfectly. It supports all games that support X-Link (Top Spin being one of them ).

#1 Change the refresh rate from the default 60!
P.S. I didn't do the lock fps.Open up the VideoDefault.con file with NOTEPAD. By default it
looks like this:
rem * TEMP *
renderer.FullScreen 1
console.showStats 0
renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 0
Make it look like this:
renderer.FullScreen 1
console.showStats 0
renderer.allowAllRefreshRates 1
renderer.lockfps 250
Notice I've changed the allowAllRefreshRates to 1 and I
added the line, renderer.lockfps 250. you don't have to put in 250,
but I've found this is the best and most stable number to use.
Make sure you hit save, not save as, and close the file.
