I wish this were possible, but I still don't think that it is. (at least not the way these crazy nutjobs are doing it) I don't have a better alternative either, just don't think this is quite possible with the available tools. I think the days of someone discovering/inventing something of this magnitude in their garage before somewhere like MIT discovers/invents it are more or less over. (I think there are a couple of posts to that effect after one of those videos.)
There may be a super efficient way to generate electricity, but I don't think it could put out more than is going in. We can't even generate enough power to do a lot of the experiments we want to do (like LHC type things) in the first place, so some guy with some magnets probably doesn't know something that these scientists don't. Or there'd be a giant one at CERN right now.
I actually hope they prove everyone wrong... ...but doubtful...

The 300%+ gain is the impossible part. The best quote from the second video is, "Any sane engineer or any rational person doesn't set out to achieve something that is absolutely impossible, and this is absolutely impossible."
If Steorn are not perfect in how they present what they are doing they will just get demolished by public from any hint of a scam - such as selling the development kits because that involves them possibly making money however it seems seriously doubtful considering who they are targeting being such a limited audience. And the fact that they have been trying to sell these things for the last few years since the six years they have been doing it is pretty ridiculous.
The way I have seen the negative public opinion forms for any sort of thing is to just look for any excuse possible to find anything negative, no matter how small, embellish the hell out of it and make that the norm. A good example that comes to mind is how many people believe Obama is a terrorist. Its fear of the unknown.
I have seen some negative things said about Steorn and it is funny how upset some of the reviewers have been about how the deadlines that Steorn has had have not been met...normally this would just be accepted as being just that - the norm but in this case of course it is seen as something else being that Steorn is hiding something or can't make it work or whatever...Engineers are always behind.
My view on all of this now is pretty simple. It is not breaking any laws of physics. The gain is greater than 100% because what I believe is happening is the energy that is put into the machine is just being used by the machine to spin the mechanics and thats it. No significant amount of the energy going into the machine is coming out of it because it is mostly being used to rotate everything. The way the energy is being "created" is that it is not being created or multiplied or generated - it is just being harvested from a not yet understood source. It would be interesting to see if you put 20 of these machines next to each other if there would be any drop off in the amount of output.

I think a really good test to do would be to have two machines power the other so that there are no batteries or stored power or whatever. Once they are given enough power to start moving they should be able to continue to go without supplying any more energy into the system. If this could be done for a huge amount of time it would show that they are in fact "generating" energy but according to me they are really just harvesting it.
