The Windows problem I've never figured out

how do you share files and folders the "correct" way?

The only way I have ever gotten this to work is through a hack I learned on Windows XP.

This is what I do when sharing between two machines A & B:

1 - create administrator accounts on machines A and B with the identical user name and password

2 - go to folder options for both machines and under view turn off simple file sharing

That's it.

Access for any file/folder from either machine is attained like this:

To access file "blah.txt" on machine As C drive where machine A is named "Alpha"

from machine Bs start->run: \\Alpha\c$\blah.txt

HOW oh HOW do you get it to work on Vista?

The simple file sharing checkbox is now replaced by Use Sharing Wizard

Vista can access XP files but XP cannot access Vista files

The usual tutorials about sharing files do not work by setting permissions and proper sharing settings from everything I have tried it always ends up the same.

I have no firewall or windows defendery thing or whatever but something is preventing incoming access IMMEDIATELY it doesn't even think about it.

ALSO, when you do the \\machine\c$ access it will bring up a user/pass dialog that fails when the correct user and password are used that exist on both machines.

Both machines are using the same workgroup and on private networks.

The only thing I can think of is there is something preventing access but I don't know what it could be.

Anyone know how to access files from an XP machine to a Vista machine? I am amazed it is that difficult.

This is the stuff I do when I set up a new vista machine:

1. Click start
2. Type: regedit
3. Press enter
4. In the left, browse to the following folder:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\system\
5. Right-click a blank area in the right pane
6. Click New
7. Click DWORD Value
8. Type: LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy
9. Double-click the item you just created
10. Type 1 into the box
11. Click OK
12. Restart your computer

You did that, and It didn't restore access to administrative shares?

I just installed Windows 7 recently, and this was all I needed to do to access C$

Word.

What a pain in the ass procedure to enable the admin access eh? Would a GUI button have been too hard?

Cool, well glad you got that working again.

Once I get my machine up and running at the new place I will install. Think I am going to go back to the HR824s as the HR624s just don't do it for me...hope teh neighbors don't hear the bass but of course during the day I could get away with it.
