Who's up for... [Tron 2.0]

... a game of Tron 2.0? Just picked it up, and have absolutely no idea why I've never played it. It's amazing. SP and MP are quite nice. Anyway, get it installed, patched, and we shall play. The Admiral and I had a go this evening on the ol' J3RK-LAN, and had a tip-top-time.

I tried to get people to play this aaages ago. Is it fun? I am up for something new. I should be around this evening as well.

It is SSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO fun!! This has shot right up into my top games list. I really can't believe I never played it. It came out right around the time of some other big games though, so I think it just got lost in the crowd. It holds up perfectly in the audio-visual department too. After some tweaking, the Admiral and I got the light-cycles working the way we wanted. Light-cycles aren't available for internet games (LAN only,) but I think Hamachi should do the trick there. The deathmatch mode is exquisite, though there are only three maps. I'm going to look around to see if there are more available somewhere. The ones that are there are quite nice though. I could easily play on them for a few hours straight. I can play tonight at some point.

I just found everything we could need here:

http://tronfaq.blogspot.com/2006/02/all ... place.html

I'm going to install all map packs (for all modes of play.) I don't think mods are necessary, but extra maps are nice.

I'm downloading and installing maps and such now... May take a little bit.

These are the map packs to download from the above site. (I've gone through all the files on the site, and these were the best:

DM-03LADR
DM_Pack1_Part
MorsMap
Z_CLU_DISPATCH_V1.1

I downloaded the lightcycle maps too, but you can only have 5 rez files installed at once. Under the Tron 2.0 folder, make a folder called Custom\Resources and dump the .REZ files in it. Or grab the WinREZ utility from that site, and it will do all this for you.

Hi, I'm the creator of the site you're talking about. (OMG, I found you! :grinnin:) I noticed this thread here, and wanted to mention a few things.
J3RK wrote:ILight-cycles aren't available for internet games (LAN only,)
That's not actually true. The Light Cycle mode can, and is, played over the Internet frequently. The warning is there because the programmers didn't want to make a guarantee that it would function well over the Internet. But it actually does, most of the time.
J3RK wrote:you can only have 5 rez files installed at once.
You should have installed the Unofficial Patch. It more than doubles the number of files you can use.
J3RK wrote:grab the WinREZ utility from that site, and it will do all this for you.
REZ Handler, not WinREZ.

You should also visit my other site, if you want to see descriptions and screenshots of all the maps.

Nice! Going to take a look at the other site now... (I'll try REZ Handler. I'm a little new to the Tron 2.0 thing, so didn't know which to use.) Also, how/why did you find me? Glad you did, just curious.

A little history here. I'm a big fat Tron-loving dork of old. Started playing Cycles3D with most of the people here (in this forum,) when we all lived together a few years back. Since then I started playing (and tweaking) GLTron to my liking, but it has no net support. (though it is still the best light-cycle experience IMO when properly adjusted) For some reason I never picked up a copy of Tron 2.0. Well, the other day I went to pick up BF2142 for whatever reason, and saw T2.0 sitting there quite cheap. Had to grab it. Looked around for some more levels and found your site. Anyway, we should organize a game sometime soon. We're all pretty busy here, but we occasionally make things happen. :)

I can play tomorrow (Wed)

I have four PCs with it installed at home too, so if local MonX0rZ want to play at my house, they are able.

Weeeeee!!!

Hey . . . sorry I didn't reply again, sooner. I was having trouble with my account here. But Enderzero sorted it out for me. Thanks!

Yeah, sadly Tron 2.0 has got to be one of the most overlooked games ever released. A lot of people wrote it off . . . either because it was not the movie sequel they wanted, or because they were not that impressed with the demos. The game really didn't come together until the final build, when it was released.

It's also partly the fault of the publisher. Buena Vista Games is absolutely horrible. Their marketing wasn't effective enough, and their support was miserable. Today, you won't even find the game listed on their web site. (They had an absolutely incredible site for the game at one time . . . gone.) I've had many verbal and written sparring matches with them, criticizing them for their awful support. But they honestly don't seem to care. I don't think we'll be seeing an expansion or new Tron game any time soon. I have plans to send in a hardcopy of a petition soon, for what it's worth.

On the bright side: the game is extremely cheap now, and a no-brainer to pick up if you find a copy. Also, there are still some maps and other projects in the works to enhance the game. BVG made it extremely difficult for those of us interested in modding, by releasing such shoddy editing tools. But we have persevered.

Finding players online for Tron 2.0 is hit-and-miss. There are times where it can get pretty busy, mostly in the evenings and on weekends. The majority of the players are on the west coast, and play around 9PM - 12AM PST. There's a chat room that was specially made for players to get together and co-ordinate times, at http://tronchat.boxhat.com.

I'm also an old-school Tron fan. I saw the film in the theater when I was a kid, and bought the 20th Anniversary DVD as soon as it came out. When the game was announced, I would rabidly chase after every scrap of info about it that I could find. But aside from the Tron comic, I'm afraid there's not much new going on with Tron these days.

Well we had just about as much fun with Light Cycles 3D when we discovered it a few years back. Not sure if you ever played that redrain, but it was just a very simple version of the light cycles game that was so perfectly tuned for what we wanted. I honestly can't remember many details about the gameplay - other than it was very simple - but I do remember we played it for like 80 hours that first week.

J3RK - weren't you in contact with the guy who was developing that as well? Looks like it was last updated Sept. 2003.

BTW - McNeivn and I played the Tron2.0 demo when it first came out, and I agree, it was very unimpressive. Glad the game is so much better.

Yeah, he open-sourced it, and nobody picked it up. GLTron http://www.gltron.org is better, but net support hasn't been added yet. It seems to make small bits of progress every once in a while. (not on the main site, but there are recent posts and betas on the SF forums) Anyway, I'm ready for a nice game-o-it when everyone's ready. Weeee!

Next match will go a bit smoother. I had it installed on three of four computers, but one of them was on the top floor. Nobody wanted to, or wanted me to play from up there, so we had to spend a little time installing it on the fourth computer (in the computer room.) Now that it's all in place, it will be much easier. I don't have all the Derez levels on all the computers yet though. Only on two of them. We also need to tune the Derez mode a little bit. Right now the run speed is a little high. I actually like the high speed, but it does make people pretty hard to hit accurately. I'd like to be able to throw the disc with a small lead, and catch someone rather than just keep throwing it repeatedly hoping one will connect. Anyway, pretty fun overall, and it was good to play light cycles again. I shouldn't have had the wine first though. It's been a long time since I've had any significant amount of alcohol (more than an occasional glass with dinner,) so I was a bit impaired. That usually doesn't impact my game playing, but it did last night.

Anyway I can play most evenings from upstairs, so we should arrange some more matches.

I'd play if I didn't have 10 million options for various files to download...what is the link for the minimal amount of crap to download in order to play?

You need the game itself (torrent or purchase) the patch 1.042ish? The set of levels is actually quite small after going through them. I'll have to come up with a list for you.

Well then, there you have it. :D

redrain: As you can see, some of our little group here, like to have these things handed to them before they'll play. What often happens, is someone will decide not to play because of a wee bit of setup. So, we don't all play very often. Surprisingly though, we've been pretty good at getting games going on Wednesday nights as of late.

I'm getting all of my PCs prepped for this again... :) Just in case... I'll be needing some UT3 and L4D players as well... I think my system is all set to run UT3 properly now.

I would totally look forward to playing it if it will work on Vista-64 and there are clear instructions on how to install because I still definitely feel the same way where I won't bother if I have to do the whole trial-by-error-and-hope-it-eventually-works thing.

Bit torrented Tron 2.0, installed, ran, asked for CD, went to game copy world and got nocd exe, ran, configured stuff, tried to play, error dialog came up about something non-descriptive, uninstalled, wrote this post.
END OF LINE

Redrain was the guy who ran the Tron 2.0 files page that hosts the unofficial patch etc. I think he noticed my post on here when doing a search or something, and stopped by.

I'll get it going on VX64, and let you know the process. I know I've had it working before. I just installed it on all of my X86 systems, so X64 is next.

I'm using the original discs, but it should work the same way. I'll be using the unofficial patch, a nocd patch, and otherwise it should be stock. There are some config files that can be edited as well, so I'll try mucking with them if things go awry...

Notice anything... awry?

Ok, I've installed it, and it works beautifully on Vista X64.

After installation I ran the tron_update_v1x042c.exe unofficial patch.
Then I used the NoCD patch from Game Copy World, as I refuse to keep my disc in the drive.
Then I started the game, started a game, saved it, and quit. (in case it needed to have a profile sitting around,(though I don't think it does.))
Then I made my CFG files look like these:

Code: Select all

"GammaB" "1.000000"
"GammaG" "1.000000"
"GammaR" "1.000000"
"BitDepth" "32"
"HardwareCursor" "0"
"screenwidth" "1920"
"VSyncOnFlip" "1"
"screenheight" "1200"
That did the trick.
Then I forced Anisotropic to 16X, and Antialiasing to 8x through the Nvidia control panel under the Tron profile. (which was set up for lithtech.exe, but I added a second one for the tron.exe)

If you still can't get it running, I have a couple more ideas for you. They're based on some problems I was having with a few games crashing on the living-room PC, which were driver related. Let me know if you need me to go through that.

Over...
