Admiral McNevin: Some newish(?) OC tactics...

Post by R3C »

It appears that people have taken to ripping the built-in heat-spreader off of their AMD 64 chips, and mounting the cooler directly onto the core. (the chips actually look like the old XPs and PIIIs with the spreaders off) Interesting, I never really thought about how it looked beneath the heat-spreader, but that makes total sense. I guess doing this yields much better cooling since the top of the core is so flat in comparison to the chunk of metal. I need to read a bit more about it. It seems like a pretty good idea, but I'd like to know if it effects how the cooler sits. My cooler has a very strange mounting system, so I'm not sure it would sit flat on the smaller core.

Wow... how xtreme! I think I am all good with the heat spreader, but that is good to know. Let me know if you decide to brave the operation.

I probably won't, at least not on the X2. I may put together an "experimentation unit delta one niner" though to try it out.
