Someone into newsgroups will have to answer that one for me. I don't think I have opened Newsbin in the last 12 months. How the hell did you find this thread?

On a related subject, who is into newsgroups these days? I should have sustainable internet access very soon and may have to start up my usenetservers account again.

McNev not using newsgroups no more?

Newsgroups remain as my primary source for binary data. Par2 rawks my rectum! Depending on your news server, incomplete posts will make your head spin. Even if a 50Mb file is only incomplete by a couple bytes, it's useless and you would have to download multiple 50Mb par files for each incomplete file in the batch. Sometimes they're aren't enough par files posted to repair the 4Gb batch of files you waited endless hours to download, which means you just downloaded a 4Gb paper weight. Wait...what?

With par2, you can download the incomplete files and patch them with itty bitty par2 files. In fact, the whole 80 50Mb file batch could consist of nothing but incomplete files and, depending on the severity of the incompleteness, you would only need one small 300Kb file to fix the whole 4Gb batch of incomplete files. Not likely, but possible. Think of it as repairing a bicycle tube. You can either replace the whole tube, or you can patch the little hole.

Would you rather download 4 Gigs of repair files...or 300 Kilos?

4 Gigs...300 Kilos?

4 Gigs...300 Kilos?

I'm sorry, what was your question? Ohh yeah, par2 has definitly taken off. Beilieve it or not, their popularity has surpased that of your grand daddy's par file.

Usebeeeph, your daily source of binaries.

Im also too cheap to shell out for a pay server.

Should of known we could count on the usenet mastah beebop!
