The Official Athlon 64 Overclocking Thread
Well... The K8N Neo4 Platinum is a pile of poo right now. What sucks is that everyone is giving it a huge thumbs up. Including HardOCP, and Toms Hardware Guide. This motherboard has horrible voltage issues at post, and will not overclock on a winchester, and possibly venice. I wish i had seen this post before I bought it.
The 219 - 229 cold boot hypertransport bug
I was able to get a 10% overclock, and basically I am running at about the same speed as my old system. Well hopefully this will be fixed in a bios patch, but this problem has existed for 3-4 months. Outlook not so good.

My CPU is running about 30 degrees too hot right now, so I can't OC it at all. I've got AS5 on it with the stock cooler, and it's running at 130-140. (Well, that's what the Windows util says.) The BIOS actually says that it's running at 165 (which I have a hard time believing.) I've seen several boards that report incorrect temps, and it's usually fixed in a BIOS update. My board is too new, so there are no updates yet.
I'm going to get another one of those big roundy-Zalman coolers, so once that's on, I'll try OCing a bit.

That sucks, how did you put on the Arctic Silver? I just put a glob about the size of a BB, in the center of the heat spreader, and slapped on the heat sink. I assume you did the same.
At a 10% overclock, im running pretty cool.
This is with stock cooling.
I do however want to get an XP-90

It will probably give you the same incorrect temperature, but have you tried Everest Home?
It's like Sisoft Sandra, with temp monitoring, but free.

Which big roundy Zalman cooler the CNPS7000B-Cu?
I cant decide between the XP-90C or the CNPS7000B-Cu

Of course I put on the AS like I'm supposed to silly. Arctic Silver and I go way back. Didn't check out Everest. My case is fairly hot inside in general, but I don't know why. I have to Panasonic fans in the front, the downfacing 120mm fan in my PSU, standard CPU cooler, etc. The only thing I don't have, (because the case doesn't allow for it,) is the rear exhaust fan. My PSU should handle that though, so I don't know what the deal is. I may make some modifications to the case. Well, I've got my memory happily running CL2 1T now. Weeeee!!! My second card will be here tomorrow. Double Weeeee!!! Don't know if I should even put it in until I solve this cooling thing though. Bleh...

Oh me and the arctic, we go way back as well...
Just checking, saw alot of people spreading the AS5 like it was an Athlon XP. Even in a review of a heatsink on a hardware website. Needless to say, I didnt believe their benchmarks...
AS far as you are concerned, I just cant imagine why it would be so hot? I agree, I wouldnt put the new card in till you get this heat issue sorted out.
Did you see my temps? Even if i give the thing like 1.6v it sitll doesn't go above 120F. I'm actually running the same speed you are now too i think. 2200Mhz. For now at least.

I know the readings are off by a certain percentage. I expect that to be fixed in a BIOS update. This seems to happen a lot with MSI and Abit boards every once in a while. By how much though, I'm not certain. I know my case feels too hot inside, so that's why I don't want to put the second card in. I may have to add one of those 90mm fans with the Zalman bracket in to try and move air away from the CPU/Vidcard area.

Yes... that was awesome. You forgot you got a new pc! Well kinda...
So yeah, this is most awesome, I'm glad we both got new PCs at the same time. I can't wait to start the benchmark operations. It totally reminds me of the Dueling Nforces. How similar our PCs are once again, cept for that pesky 2nd card of yours

Got mine working. It idles around 104-105. Peaks around 133.
240 FSB
4x HTT Mult
166 Div
2400MHz
2-3-3-7 (timings)
I put a higher speed fan in the front, and added a small exhaust fan to the back. (Ripped an A64 cooler's fan off)
I can't believe that it's enough to exhaust all that heat, but it's working. I'll figure out a better way eventually, but this works for now. At least I can play some games.
I only ran Prime for 30 minutes, but that's good enough for now.

I just had to share this. I was telling someone about the SL2W7 today, and I Google'd 'SL2W7' this page on the forum actually comes up #7 on the first page of results!
We are a part of the SL2W7/SL2W8 legacy! That supercomputer was no match... for my... patented... hmm, something.
P.S. I'm still using the same CPU cooler as I was 6+ years ago, can you believe it?!? The Magical XP-90c. They started on socket 479, but then sold a 939 conversion kit, and remarkably later a LGA 775 adapter. When I get my next computer, I want to have this cooler made into a trophy to celebrate its awesomeness!
