I just finally got me one of these:
Any jp or other knowledgable folks have an opinion on which rice I should buy? The is a local "Indochina Mart" that seems to have a wide variety of Japanese rice. Any brand actually better than another? I would hate to buy Sanyo rice instead of Sony.

I don't know if you are looking for some authentic japanese rice or not. But in general I find mahatma long grain rice to do the trick for just about anything I need it for. And I cook with alot of rice. 3-5 meals a week.

Our in-house authority suggests the following three:
1. Koshihikari (from Niigata)
2. Akita komachi (from Akita)
3. Hitomebore (from Miyagi?)
Those are the Big Three. The overall advice I was asked to pass on though it that fresh rice is best (meaning Japanese rice might not necessarily be your best bet).
