by building a website where people can post pics of their computer w/ specs and rate them based on looks and performance. Kinda like hotornot.com, but with less hot girls. I CALL IT "RATEMYRIG" dot com. I should it have it up and dominating within the next few billion parsecs...or as soon as I find time to write the fucker. All donations and inovative ideas are greatly appreciated as you monkeys and this post are what gave me the idea. However, when people ask me what gave me the idea, Im gonna tell them it was all me. Here are my specs:

Processor: Intel P4 2.4GHz (overclocked 3.3GHz) FSB 800 w/ HyperThr.
Cooling system: Standard military issued vantec CPU cooling fan

I guess it's time to get that damned 875 board. We'll have nearly matching systems. [TEE HEE HEE] I don't know if I'll go with a new proc yet though. Since it was the first thing I ever won, I have to hold onto it for at least another month or two. I do want to put my 512s in their own banks though, and the 875 is perfect for that. I'm torn right now. I may want a GeForce FX 5900 Ultra. I may have played with some of them extensively, but I umm... don't rember, yeah... don't remember. On the other hand my 9700 Pro is serving me so well. That's a 2.4C P4 right? How is it at 3.3? It seems to me that all you run is Counter Strike, so perhaps that speed hasn't endured a real engine yet??? [TEE HEE HEE] (I'm sure it has, but I must know.) That option is looking good for me, because my standard 2.8 should go for near what a lower clocked C would cost. Haven't checked that theory yet, but it seems sound. I'd like to donate a bunch of Voodoo 2s to you to help with your new site. They wouldn't do much, but when someone asked what kind of server you run your site on, you can list off a bunch of impressive specs, and include the Voodoo2s in that list. All they'll be able to say is "Wow!" (And they'll think long and hard about why you have Voodoo2s in your top-end server.) That's my idea for your site, and you have my permission to take full credit for it. Of course you could always get it hosted somewhere and lie about that impressive dual Opteron, 4GB, 2TB, server with 2 voodoo 2s in it. :D So what's going down, umm, down there?

can someone pass the apserin

And thats why I, the One, chose you fortunate few to be my companions while here on earth. It's these ingenious and artistic ideas, such as backboning the most elaborate computer rating service known to man with dual-voodoo2s...which makes me value our friendship. Scanline Interlacing will forever change the way people rate other peoples computers...based on looks and performance. I plan to construct an intricate beowulf cluster comprised soley of dual-voodoo2 based computers to ensure total dominance. And I swear by almighty Marduk, we will changge this world one scanline at a time. And when all is right in the world and people ask me how I did it...I will make clear to them it was all me.

So I hear the 865 boards works just a bit better with the P4 2.4C chip, if you're thinkin of trying the chip out. And they're cheaper! That proc is the most fabulous array of logic circuits and transistors I've ever pumped threatening levels of voltage through. I heard some crazy stories about this mysterious little black thing and I had to see for myself. So I took the FSB as high as I could without going over 50 degrees celsius...and the speed stands at 3.3GHz with a basic $30 vantec fan sitting on top of it. Amazing! How severly intoxicated I am right now.

J3RK, nothing has changed since you've seen me last, except my car...which doesn't belong to me at the moment. Things are swell down here, still riding and falling on every kind of board meant for extreme usage. Still playing Counter-Strike at 28,345 frames per second. Still consuming lots of anti-headache pills. Still sleeping alot.

Ahh, the continuation of Sleeeph!!!

Damn right, over. Yeah, I'm right in the middle of switching to summer mode. I think I'll be doing some riding soon. I'm finally going to check out the Inglewood jumps with Rick. I hear there is a very long nice table top, which would be perfect for me to practice on. I guess it's long enough so that I can try various speeds and still land on top until I'm ready to take it out like robocop. I'll roll it up.... [TEE HEE HEE] Haven't quoted Mix-A-Lot in a while :D

I've been Sleeeph TM-ing a lot lately too. No headache pills though. Perhaps I should start?

I ordered my Canterwood board. It should be here tomorrow or Tuesday. I'm already using two 512MB DDR400 sticks, so they'll be quite happy in their own channels. The only thing left to do after that, is to get a P4C chip. I have a 2.8 P4 right now though that runs at 3.0-3.2ish, so I'll be good until I can grab an 800FSB bastard I think. We have the MasterBoxes of the Universe, (at least for those of us who won't water-cool.) By the power of Intel.... [TEE HEE HEE]

I just picked up my 2.4C today, so I haven't put the new proc in yet. I will have my OCed results this evening. Anyway, here's what's goin' down:

Motherboard: Abit IC7 (Intel i875 chipset with BIOS flash to support the game acceleration.)
CPU: Intel P4C 2.4GHz (I'll probably run it at 3.0GHz, even if it will do more.)
RAM: 1GB Kingston PC3200 (512MB x2.)
HDD: 2 80GB Seagate Barracuda IV ATA100 (Will probably get two SATA drives eventually.)
DVD: Toshiba M1612 (Damn fine device.)
CDR: MSI 48X
Video: ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
Audio: Creative Audigy 2
LAN: Netgear FA310 (Using the DEC tulip chip and some Broadcom thingy.)
Case: Older boxy InWin (My favorite.)
PSU: 300 Watt silencer. (Will be switching to 350 or 430 soon.)
Keyboard: Microsoft non-natural internet keyboard (Still going to switch to the natural.)
Mouse: Microsoft mid-range optical
Monitor: Viewsonic PF790
Speakers: Mackie HR8-24 studio monitors
Headphones: Sony Studio 7506
Desk: Some semi-nice curved jobby I picked up for $20
Chair: Standard issue costco computer chair
Lighting: Blue and Green separately controlled lamps for dark and cool game-playing goodness :D

OK...

... well, I was one of the unlucky 2% who got a retail 2.4C that wouldn't overclock easily to 3GHz+. So far I've only gotten mine up to 2.8, but I have my RAM timings set quite aggressively. I get an extra 1500 3DMarks in 2003 though, so I'm not too disappointed. This Abit board is pretty impressive. There are almost too many settings and tweaks in it. Hey Fuqin' Joe, what are your voltages and speeds set like? I tried bumping up me voltage a wee, but it didn't really help. I can get it into Windows at 3.0GHz, but UT 2003 likes to crash at that speed. 2.8 is rock solid. It doesn't post above 3.0. I may be missing something. There are a few settings that I'm not completely sure about, so there is still quite a bit of experimentation to do.

Call them what you will...but they are the ones who decide just how much power you're gonna squeeze outta that chip. I've finally ended up with the Cadillac of MoBos, the ASUS P4P800 board (865), and it seems to work the best with my 2.4GHz chip out of the 8 motherboards I've bought and returned in the last month. My previous board, the Gigabyte board, let me run pretty smooth at a stunning 3.3GHz. My new board has me running at a solid 3.45GHz with a standard Coolermaster fan and its not until I take it up to 3.5GHz that wierd things start happening, and at 3.7GHz it no longer POSTs. Previous boards wouldn't let me POST past 2.8GHz. My voltage sits at the default 1.5V, because Im gonna have to use a Voltmod and some crazy cooling system if I want to see any more speed. [/img] <---oops, I hate it when I do that

People are getting those results out of the board I have. I've also seen some articles about the 2.4C SL??? yields not being completely consistent. (That's the skew I have too.) With the latest BIOS flash, I have all of the options of any of those boards, and it's got 4 phase power, and Abit basically only builds boards for wacky OCing bastards like us. I'd be curious to see what my chip did in another board though. I have a feeling that it still wouldn't hit what your chip is doing. I still have not even begun to experiment though. What I've achieved so far is only what I could do in the couple hours after I got the board. I've been lazy after that because I'm pretty happy with the speed it's running. (Though I will squeeze more out of it.) I also would prefer a Carrera 4S of a motherboard to a Cadillac :D :D :D :D :D :D Actually, I really like the ASUS boards, but there were some things about the Abit 875 that I liked. I normally would not buy an Abit board. Normally I would only get ASUS or MSI. I just need to poke about some more. Nice clocks your getting. This is the first time I've seen people be able to overclock by 1GHz without liquids and big external boxes. Anyway, I'll update this when I get a chance to play more.

Did you get the OEM or Retail version of the chip? If you got the OEM, that could be the problem because they cherry pick the retails.

It's...

Posted: Tue Jun 24, 2003 3:18 pm

... a retail. I think it might be my memory, but I don't want to buy new memory. I found some timings that may help in that department, so I'm going to try that. If I put the timings at more conservative levels and up the voltage a wee, it might do it. Otherwise I'll have to pick up some Corsair or something. The thing is, I have a gig-o-ram, and it costs a bit to buy that much nice ram. If I didn't have other things I wanted to spend $$ on right now, I'd buy a gig-o-Corsair-PC3500. I'm picking up a GeForce FX 5900 Ultra next Friday, (when they are released locally,) so maybe that will make enough of a difference for me.

... Friday should be new display day all around. :D :D :D Wooo Wooooooooo!!!!!!

Yeah 3DMark 2003 isn't so cool. I guess the best things to use would be the UT2003 benchmark (There's an exe in the UT2003 folder,) Quake 3, and there's this little spheroid testing thingy. The filename is called: rthdribl_1_1.zip 3DMark 2001 isn't bad either for DX 8 testing. Basically, I don't like the number 2003 gives because it factors in things like sound, that shouldn't be there. If it was just CPU and video it wouldn't be so bad. The other thing is that who knows what's going on anymore with driver cheats. There've been so many wacky articles on that stuff lately, that I don't even bother anymore. I'll run 3DMark 2003 just to see how my box compares before and after I upgrade something. It works pretty well for that.

3DMark2001SE wouldn't even run because it told me that DirectX8.1 couldn't be found. Is there a patch out there for it?

... don't know for sure, but a ton of hardware sites still use it, and I doubt they all revert to DX 8.1. The thing about directx (At least since 3, maybe all the way back I don't know,) is that I think it is always a superset of the previous version, so no functionality should change. So if they are detecting 8.1 specifically, and not the presence 8.1 compatibility then they are waqy.

Posted: Wed Jul 02, 2003 10:57 am
by enderzero
I figured it was just a software error in not being able to detect the DX9 is actually a later version of DX8.1. That's why I thought there might be a patch out there for 3DMark2001. DX9 cannot be uninstalled, so if people are running 01 still they are either using a version of 01 that works with DX9 or running it before they install DX9. Also my results could be an isolated case.

Has anyone personally gotten 3DMark2001 SE to run on a system with DirectX9a?
