(CNN) -- Christopher Reeve, who portrayed a hero in the "Superman" films and embodied one as an advocate for spinal cord research after being paralyzed in an accident, has died. He was 52.

I am sad. It takes a lot of guts to be a thinking person straped to a chair. I admire him for telling/showing us what it was like...for advocating for a way to free those who are and will be in a similar chair! Kerry talked of him in the last dabate...stem cell research.

He truly was a great spokesman for para/quadrapaligics. One of my life-long friend's father got into a major road-biking accident last year and is now in a wheel chair and on a long and slow road to recovery. This man was the most active 50+ year old I knew, and went riding (on snow and on pedals) with me many times...so sad to see that happen to someone...

If you are referring to my mom's post I think she is saying he brought attention to the issue of quadra/parapalegics and to people with disabilities in general. Anytime a high profile celebrity goes through something like that it brings a certain amount of recognition from people that would normally ignore it. Christopher Reeve was a huge proponent of stem cell research (story) which, not surprisingly, pretty much everyone that has a condition or knows someone with a condition that would benefit from the research is a supporter of. Science and our society in general would benefit greatly from this form of research and there is zero issue of it being done morally and humanely.

Reeves was a pop culture hero, so maybe he isn't due the respect, hubbub and airplay he may be receiving. There is a lot more happening in this world.
My thoughts are: Pop culture exists, a lot of it is stupid, but a lot of people buy it, it is big money. So Reeves made a lot of money selling pop culture. When he fell off the horse movies and moveing were nolonger an option. He said suicide was an option. I respect him for using what he had, visability, to make people think about something other than pop culture. He was no god (although he was Superman ) he simply found a reason to live and did what he could. I'd be glad to live life that way!
