Sounds like a power supply problem to me.

It is also possible that this is one of those boards that used the bad ripoff capacitors, in which case a new board may be in order. If you look at the capacitors up near the CPU (the tall cylindrical components if you aren't familiar) if they are bad, they should be either bulging, leaking, or you may have some corrosion on the board around there.

it has been working fine for 18 months
That's what's been perplexing/frustrating me as well. I haven't added any new HW devices or any such business recently. The fan has been "noisy" the past few months though, so I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it.

Thanks for the tips, Jerk. I'll check the capacitors, but I don't recall seeing any signs of corrosion when I looked over the mobo the past few days.

I was able to get it to post last night and got to the BIOS menu to change the timing settings manually. That worked temporarily, but then I got the same error message (and resultant no post). When that happens, it seems that the HDD is not powering up at all (even though all of the fans and the mobo are turning on). I wasn't able to get it to post again last night, but will try again tonight. If I can get that, I will hit F2 to set the timings back to the default (not the high performance settings).

If that does not work, I may raise a hand in anger... :grind:

Could be the power supply then. It would require more current to spin up a hard drive than it would to spin a couple of fans.
