SP1 for Windows 7. I hate it! Tell it I hate it!!
I can't remember the last time I actually had a real computer problem that wasn't brought about by something like over-overclocking or something caused by me, that I knew why, etc.
I installed SP1 a few days ago, and have gotten semi-random blue screens ever since. Portal 2 unlocked early last night because everyone played the hell out of those indie games, and I didn't even get to play it.
So, the typical causes for this BS [HEE HEE HEE] are sleep modes, and language packs (from what I've read so far.) Well, I don't use language packs, and I've got just about every sleep function (short of the display) turned off, as I like my computer accessible all the time. I've also read of other people having this problem just when opening files, which seems to be more along the lines of my issue. It happens every time Steam tries to validate/decrypt my Portal 2 files, when I'm just about done with a large copy, and sometimes when it's just sitting there (though it could be opening or closing any number of files while "idle" so I'm not entirely sure that it's just sitting there.
There is a KB file that might fix it, (relating to sleep and drive controllers,) and someone said updating to the latest intel SATA driver helped. I'll be trying these when I get home tonight. Otherwise, it's off with SP1. Those stupid idiots. The whole reason I pre-ordered Portal 2 is so I could play it when it unlocked. Even more when they started their publicity stunt of the early unlock for playing indie games. Did I ever mention how much I hate Microsoft?
Well, if I didn't. I hate Microsoft!
They belong in Pod 6.

Yeah, this is the first problem I've had since running Windows 7. Also, it seems damned near unfixable. I tried hotfix. Tried uninstalling SP1, tried installing new drivers. Basically, it's been blue-screening since SP1 went on. Absolutely no other changes in software or hardware. I even cleaned it out, reapplied thermal compound in case it was general instability and a coincidence with the SP1 install. NO. It still does it even after SP1 was removed now, but I don't know just how "removed" it is, because it blue screened while I was removing it the first time. I then had to remove it a second time, but it didn't seem like it did much. No I have what most people would call a mess, and I don't even want to mess with it at this point. I'm just going to get a new hard drive, do a fresh install, then move over my data from the old drive. This is going to be a bit of a process at this point, as I've never had a Windows install last this long. (Good and bad I guess.)
So, I still didn't get to play Portal 2 yet. Don't think I'm going to pre-order things anymore. I always have something like this happens when it's supposed to unlock. Either the servers are too busy (like with BioShock,) or my computer blows up for the first time in years, or an anvil falls on my head. You know, the typical things...
