Distinct Arcade Memories

Post by enderzero »

Wil Wheaton wrote a pretty damn good memoir about growing up in the arcade age and his lament over the loss of these cultural gathering points at SuicideGirls of all places.
Ensign Crusher wrote:Super Pac-Man, Defender, Gyruss, and Mouse Trap drop me through the worm hole into Sunland Discount Variety, a sort of family-run grocery and hardware store that pre-dates minimarts. I can close my eyes right now, and hear the old mechanical cash register and whirring Slush Puppy machine (ten pumps of syrup, please.) I can feel the cool dusty linoleum tiles beneath my bare feet when I stopped on my way back home from the community pool over several childhood summers, the chlorine burning my eyes and lungs, always afraid that the old Chinese man who worked there wouldn't accept my soaking wet dollar bills from my soaking wet pocket, or would enforce the "no shirt, no shoes, no service" policy announced on the front door.
...this got me thinkin, what games do I remember very distinctly because of their locations?

The one that jumps immediately to mind is Robocop at Blake's pizza in Carnation. I don't think I ever got past the 2nd or 3rd level, but i remember pumpin the quarters in and seeing him walk up, pull the gun out of his leg, and say something like, "Stop, police!" I also remember playing Rolling Thunder and Ivan Stewart's Super Off Road at Blakes, but Robocop stands out most.

My earliest arcade memory is the sitdown Mario Bros. at the old laundromat in Duvall which was across from the Family Grocer. Thinking back that was probably my very first video game experience.

I also have early memories of playing Moon Patrol on the Evergreen State ferry traveling up to Orcas Island to visit my grandparents. Later I remember playing Cruisin' World (hit the gas twice for nitro!) while the ferry rocked back and forth.

I'm sure some more will come to me. How about you guys?
