Kurosawa Redux

Post by enderzero »

Somwhat old news, but I just read that Yoshimitsu Morita, director of black comedy The Family Game has signed on to direct a remake of Kurosawa's Sanjuro. Apparently, the filmmakers are going so far as to shoot using the original Ryuzo Kikushima screenplay (see twitch article). If nothing else it will be interesting to see a different director's take on the same source material - but Morita has some pretty big sandals to fill.

Hmm....
Do you suppose he'll try Yojimbo next?
Not that that hasn't been done 3 or 4 times already, but Sanjuro was kind of a prequel...

I saw a few scenes from this several weeks ago on TV here and was thoroughly unimpressed with Yuji Oda in the title role. Imagine if they did a remake of Conan the Destroyer, but cast Freddie Prinze Jr in the title role. That's about the same. :noway:

I wouldn't really expect anyone to be able to live up to Mifune, but that was worse than I imagined.
