I've had my ps2 for a while now just collecting dust, and figured it was time to investigate what was out there in the ps2 mod-scene. Seems like the scene has come a long way since the last time I checked. They've got HD rom booting as well as PC to PS2 ftp. I also discovered this: DMS4 EZI, which is the only no-solder chip kit for the ps2. The installation was a little difficult just due to the sensitivity of the various connections inside the ps2 (Small ribbon cables coming loose, etc..), but I finally got it working.
I picked up the HD adapter, and got an app called HD Loader, but haven't had a chance to pick up a drive yet. I've just been burning discs up until now, and I've come across a handful of really good Japanese PS2 titles that I completely missed.

My friend uses hdadvance, the no mod solution. Requires a gigantic PS2 though (not a slim) i believe.
