Hey is that the one game where you are some guy in a 3d world that goes around killing things?

That is indeed the game that it is. There is definitely a 3D world, and you're a guy (or girl I imagine,) that goes around killing things. The features you left out though, are that you get stronger by killing more things. :D

Haven't heard a bad thing about it yet. I picked it up, so I'll report back later. I've heard that it takes around an hour just to get to the part where you define your character. (40-100 hours total) You can also rome around quite freely I guess too. (one of my favorite things about this style of RPG)

This is an incredibly cool game by the way. Simple UI, you can get to anywhere you can see, graphics are amazing in some parts, slightly less than amazing in others, but still excellent, nice combat, nice mini-games for picking locks and other such stuff, you can decided whether you want to wander about exploring or stick with the story, and travelling to different areas is QUITE easy. This is quite possibly the best game of this style to come out in recent years. It's like what Ultima IX would have been if they A. Finished the game before EA forced it out the door. B. Had proper voice actors. (Patrick Stuart is one of the main characters in Oblivion) C. Fine tuned a bunch of things. (which is really part of A)

I highly recommend this game. (and I only just managed to get past the introductory/tutorial dungeon) The game is drippings with atmosphere.

Looks good. Did anyone actually play Morrowind for more than 5 minutes? I remember it taking forever to crack or something.

You do. It is in fact the Bee's Knees! TM

It has been invited to my special realm of games. You know, the one where System Shock, Ultima 8, Quake III, Robotron, etc. hang out.

Definitely get into it. It's actually quite easy to follow the plot if that's what you want to do. You can instantly travel anywhere using the map. I tend to meander about in the woods, and find nifty places, and treasure dungeons and the like. There are some excellent hacks you can do to the game to get it looking nicer. Check this site out: http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/article.asp ... =36222&p=1

There are some nice performance tweaks, and ways to get the grass textures to extend all the way into the background. Still runs pretty well. I did most of the tweaks on the site. The game looks incredible now. I want whatever the new NV card is that comes after the 7900 series. (G80?) That ought to run it nicely. My 7800GT runs it pretty well, but could be a little better.

The game has some pretty amazing AI. I was reading in one forum how someone snuck into a place that had mages and archers. (naughty-folk) He poisoned one of his arrows and shot one of the mages. All the mages attacked the archers because they were the nearest NPCs to the mages with bows. :D

Mine doesn't seem to go that slow. Wonder what's causing that. Is my CPU clocked higher? The game does do some multithreading. I don't think it's dual core compliant, but that might still speed it up a little if the threads get spread over the cores. Who knows. I'm running in 1280x1024 Ultra High detail, with the grass and trees pushed way back.

i'm also pulling about 20fps in the grass with the 7800gt, did you try any of the performance tweaks? I did, so far none of em really increase my fps which is all I'm really shootin for. the game is impressive and it has definitely sucked me in. does anyone know if it's possible for me to open up a business in the game? I wanna open a store that sells nothing but lockpicks and I know I'll make a bundle doing it. Not sure what I'm gonna call it, perhaps "The Lucky Lockpick" or "Beeephs Stick and Pick".

NV 6800 GS - Lower cost
NV 7900 GT - Bit more

If you want ATI perhaps the X1800XT.

Are the Nvidia cards just as clear as the ATI cards for 2D though? I think I remember someone stating that the current generation Nvidia's are no longer blurry in 2d and are just as good as ATI.

That's been the case since the 6XXX series. They are quite nice 2D-wise.

i didn't feel it was relevant to mention that, nor did I feel it was relevant to mention it won't cost more than $10 to ship. besides, people don't care about the whole used vs unused thing, they only care about texels and RAMDACs.

so I finally fried that dirty abit mobo we've all used and passed on. while I was pulling out the video card to take pictures of it, a loose usb cable plugged into the front mount cooked something. i found an exact dirty abit mobo at frys for $39 on sale. wizzz00t!

so does everyone still favor BFG brand with the new 7900s?

I like BFG. There are other OCed cards for slightly less, but their cards look nice, they have a nice warranty (even if their support is stupid,) etc.

Well I was all about the BFG, but now im not so sure.

eVGA is my new favorite, they clock thier cards higher than BFG, and they have recently added lifetime warranty to their cards.

and bfg's tech support is really stupid. I had to go thru hell just to get a tracking number, and i paid for 2 day shipping, and they messed up and sent it ground. I had to reach the execs at the company to get reimbursed.

eVGA is nice too. (as is XFX) Most of them are based on the reference design, so it's not really that big a deal. Some companies just seem to be a little better at picking good yields than others.

Here is a better tweaks page: http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_4.html

There are better methods, some mods that fix the LOD problems with less slowdown, etc. I'd recommend reverting to the original .INI file, and then going through these.

I should have to come over and get oblivionated while at the same time possibly drink myself close to there for the sake of donkeys everywhere. I wonder if there is any donkey wine??? Hmmm...I think that would be quite appropriate!

I installed the graphical mods from that last tweaking site. The game runs incredibly well now, and actually looks better than when I just pushed out the grid settings. It looks like it runs around 30+ FPS in heavily wooded grassy areas now. I highly recommend going through the whole process on the site above. I have reached the addiction point with the game now. I was just playing it for around 30 minutes at a time here and there until last night. Now I can't stop playing it. Amazing game.
