Windows validation failed for legit copy...

Post by Bill Drayton Jr. »

So I wanted to download the latest Directx and had to run this GenuineCheck.exe but the validation failed - is there a workaround like there is for the windows update?

Teh hax0rs will always win - they can do anything...all our base belongs to them....

I just used ye olde new windows genuine advantage blah blah on my illegal copy of WinXpProw/sp2 volume edition simply by pasting this into the address bar before choosing express or custom

javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')

That doesn't work for what I was trying to do - I'm not trying to get past windows update.

Try and download the directx runtime from microsoft using that and you will see that it doesn't work.

Oh, I see. What if you update DirectX from Windows Update? I never do it this way, but it is there. Or what about downloading the ReDist file, and installing it that way. The basic runtime installs from the internet. The ReDist installs from the hard drive. If that doesn't work, I have a ton of games that come with it on the disc.

yeah...pretty much my problem could just be avoided by not taking the route I'm taking but but was wondering if there was a way around it...looks like I actually may have fux0red my self because I ran the genuine check on my legit copy of windows and used the result from that on another machine. The validation failed message says that it happens if you install one copy of windows on more than one machine though which I didn't do but...anyway...

So our little trick for dissabling the genuine advantage plugin doesn't work anymore. They greyed out that option.

you can still use this: javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')

but thats annoying.

Here is a better fix:

download axhelper from http://www.nirsoft.net/ (it's free!)
decompress and run axhelper.exe
select 'Load ActiveX list from the following CLSID/ProdID list:'
and paste this: LegitChec kControl.LegitCheck.1
and click OK
Right-click on the registry key and select ' Disable selected item'
Close all IE Windows and restart IE

What's even more annoying is that the network download of SP2 now has Genuine Check in its install.
